I don’t think there’s ever been a time in my life when all three have gone well. Then again I’ve had three good football years out of 29.

Sexist Smearing of Oakeshott Costs Guardian Five-Figure Sum
please log in to view this image

Remember that outrageously sexist piece that defamed Isabel Oakeshott in The Guardian? Guido covered it in some detail here. Isabel hired the “rottweiler of the right” hardball lawyer Donal Blaney to secure the removal of the comments and an apology by 4pm today. Wisely The Guardian caved in before the deadline.
This has now appeared under the article:
“This satirical sketch originally included a comment – fictitious, of course – which could have been interpreted as being of a sexual and vulgar nature about Isabel Oakeshott. Although this was not our intention, we acknowledge the potential for distress and misinterpretation and we apologise to her for any distress this has caused.”
A further clarification/correction will appear in the print edition tomorrow and will go up elsewhere on the appropriate page on The Guardian website. It will be tweeted out by The Guardian about now too. In simple terms, however, it is game, set and match. The Guardian has agreed to pay a five-figure damages and costs settlement and to apologise for the sordid things it wrote about Isabel. Let’s not forget how John Crace at first tried to spin the trashy, sexist smearing of Oakeshott as somehow an allusion to the “tooth fairy”. Brexit has driven people mad

Sajid Javid singled out Cage, a rights group, for “spreading division”STEFAN ROUSSEAU/PA
A controversial advocacy group is to be stopped from sponsoring migrant workers under a crackdown on organisations that “reject British values”, Sajid Javid said yesterday.
In a speech on extremism the home secretary singled out Cage for “spreading division”.
Cage has called for an end to the “injustices of the war on terror” and provides support for those accused of terrorism. In 2015 it described Mohammed Emwazi, also known as “Jihadi John”, who beheaded Western hostages in Syria, as an “extremely kind, gentle, beautiful young man”.
Mr Javid told an audience in London that the organisation would have its licence to sponsor migrant workers, which enables them to get a visa, revoked. He said that new guidance gives the government the right to refuse or…

Why I’m delighted for Darren Grimes

    Stephen Daisley

Darren Grimes has won his appeal against a £20,000 fine imposed by the Electoral Commission. Grimes, the 25-year-old who ran the BeLeave campaign group, was accused by the watchdog of breaching expenditure rules during the EU referendum. Following proceedings which saw Grimes crowdfund his legal campaign, Judge Marc Dight has ruled that the fine be withdrawn. The Guardian reports:
‘Dight agreed with Grimes’ counsel that the campaigner had not intended to mislead and had been confused by the Electoral Commission’s registration form. He further concluded that the commission had failed to satisfy itself beyond reasonable doubt that BeLeave was not a genuine unincorporated association, and therefore was not able to conclude an offence had been committed.
‘The judge made no comment on Grimes’ allegations of abuse of process by the commission. However he did observe that even had the offence been committed, it would not have warranted the maximum possible fine of £20,000 that the commission chose to impose.’
The Election Commission has not ruled out an appeal.
Grimes has repeatedly accused the Commission of ‘bias’ in this case. I’ll leave it to others to give their thoughts on that and more generally what some Leavers see as victimisation of their side by a vengeful ‘establishment’.
Instead, I’d say that while I disagree with Grimes on Brexit — and many other things — and I believe the Leave campaign(s) have led us into the greatest national humiliation since Suez, nevertheless, I am glad for Grimes given how scary and lonely this process must have felt, and also given the viciousness to which he has been subjected by some of my fellow Remainers.
Social media is a snake pit but the venom spat at him has been relentless and often gleefully sadistic. Remainers wanting to see him imprisoned was even the subject of a sneery piece from the Independent. Even more troubling are the litany of tweets he has been sent taunting him about being sent to prison and — there is no seemly way to put this — raped in the showers. Scores of them, all of the ‘don’t drop the soap’ genre. It’s not just that such rhetoric has gone unchallenged; it’s the fact that those using it consider themselves the enlightened, liberal wing of British politics.
No matter now, I suppose. Grimes has a promising future in front of him in right-wing think-tankery and perhaps even Parliament. I wonder, though, about the future of political debate in our country, which has been so debased that it’s left a dripping wet Remoaning centrist like me feeling sorry for the Geordie Jacob Rees-Mogg.

    scousers upset with tories kids

Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg shared a family photo that left Liverpool FC fans raging

Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg shared a picture of himself enjoying a family weekend with his children - but one detail left Liverpool FC fans absolutely raging.
The MP for North East Somerset has proved controversial over his support of "hard Brexit" and opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion.
Taking a day off from politics, the dad-of-six shared a snap on Instagram of his family enjoying an ice-cream in the weekend sunshine.
He shared the photos with his 68,000 followers, saying: "Ice cream covered children at the Corston County Fair in glorious sunshine."
While Rees-Mogg wore a full three-piece tweed suit in the baking sunshine, it was his children's attire that attracted outrage from Liverpool FC fans.
Two of his sons were dressed in full Liverpool FC kits, with one sporting the new season kit while the other even has the club socks on to match.
His son's choice of team did not go down well with Liverpool FC fans , who were quick to point out the Tories' record on Merseyside - and how far removed Rees-Moggs' politics are from the majority of Reds supporters.

Taking to Twitter, angry fans were quick to share their opinions. Joe Walters said: "Do they know if their father had his way Liverpool the city wouldn’t exist?"
Tim O'Connor said: "Christ, can you lot leave us NOTHING undefiled? Not ONE thing?"
Commenting on Instagram, darafoody said: "Shame that your hero Maggie Thatcher wasn't so supportive of Liverpool."
Stephen Poynor simply said: "Make it stop."

Ged Hindley said on Facebook: "I'm a Liverpool supporter and I don't care who their dad is, YNWA little Moggs, but your dad is a t**l."
And Colin Murray said: "Maybe his kids support Liverpool? It would be wrong for their dad to tell them they can't wear their favourite football team's kit just because he doesn't like them."
Elaine O'Callaghan said: "Oh for pities' sake. Are children not allowed to choose which team they support now ?!?! "
Some fans were quick to point to
Liverpool FC's record in Europe, in light of Rees-Mogg's desire to leave the EU under a hard Brexit.
Rob Perry said: "Bizarre - Liverpool FC have the most Remain-ery manager in the league!"
Iain Christie said: "I thought that they hated Europe."
Rees-Mogg has six children - Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher, Peter, Mary, Thomas, Anselm and Alfred.

Apologies for the cut and paste (!), but this was sent to me by e-mail so there is no link that I can post. I'm not a Labour party member, but my mate Jezza saw fit to include me in this circular to members and I thought it might be of interest....

    Dear Martin,

The struggle for liberation of all people is never complete and must always be renewed. As a movement, we educate ourselves and each other to better stand in solidarity with and unite all those facing oppression and discrimination.

That's why we are launching education materials for our members and supporters to help them confront bigotry, wherever it arises. Over the coming months, the party will produce educational materials on a number of specific forms of racism and bigotry. Our first materials are on antisemitism, recognising that anti-Jewish bigotry has reared its head in our movement.

    Browse our new antisemitism minisite
Read our new leaflet on antisemitism

Hatred towards Jewish people is rising in many parts of the world. Our party is not immune from that poison – and we must drive it out from our movement.

While other political parties and some of the media exaggerate and distort the scale of the problem in our party, we must face up to the unsettling truth that a small number of Labour members hold antisemitic views and a larger number don't recognise antisemitic stereotypes and conspiracy theories.

The evidence is clear enough. The worst cases of antisemitism in our party have included Holocaust denial, crude Jewish-banker stereotypes, conspiracy theories blaming Israel for 9/11 or every war on the Rothschild family, and even one member who appeared to believe that Hitler had been misunderstood.

So please engage with the materials we are producing, which will be placed on a page on our website, along with other resources, so our movement can be the strongest anti-racist force in our country.

I have learned so much, I hope you will too, so that together we can fight these evils.

    In solidarity,

I don't sense any negative feeling towards Jewish people, towards the state of Israel, absolutely, plenty of people question the behaviour of the Israeli government, just like they do the U.K. government or the US government or Russia or China, but that doesn't amount to hating British, American, Russian or Chinese people. What am I missing?

Are you a Labour Party member? Have you read the accounts given by Jewish MPs and members of the party that have received a constant level of abuse from other Labour members? This has come to the fore since Corbyn became leader. I find it depressing that a party I had supported for over 40 years has become what it is, a Party of hatred for those who don't share the extreme Left mantra. They are as bad as the extreme Right, a situation in which there are no winners...
