With the soft ground, Newbury is a complete no bet but reading Richard Fahey’s SportingLife column, the Super Sprint should be going to him for a fourth time with Ventura Rebel, clearly the form pick just beaten in the Norfolk.

It is hard to summon up any enthusiasm for the Ripon card with too many excuse horses or ones that have not won for ages but keep running places at short prices.

There is only one Group 1 winner in the Irish Oaks so that one is very easy to bypass.

At HQ, third in the Ribblesdale ought to be good enough form for Sparkle Roll to win the Aphrodite (2:40) but she is a short price for a hold-up horse in a race that may not be strongly run; and where the trainer also has a run-once-won-once filly.

The HQ card is disappointing because most of the handicaps seem to be dominated by handicap debutants; however, the 3:50 is the exception.

I have never heard of the jockey on Mark Johnston’s Victory Command and the jockey stats show this is his seventh ride, second this year and his only winner was his first ride in August 2018. The horse ran a good race in the Britannia but ran a stinker trying to make all over course and distance last Saturday. Topweight Indeed is favourite on the strength of a ten furlong win at Chelmsford prior to which he was 50/1 second in the Spring Cup at Newbury. Ed Dunlop has two here and Alternative Fact has the services of Frank but requires one to believe that he will reproduce his third last time out as his previous five races were rubbish. Gerald Mosse gets the ride again on GLOBAL GIFT, bottom weight despite winning his last three and raised 6lb for the most recent of those. The worry is that he might be a small field horse as he faced an aggregate of eight rivals in his last two races.

    hi folks!

    market rasen,2 45:

NATIVE FIGHTER looks to have a really sound chance here,as his win last time out has been boosted by the second horse since then, and a 3 lbr rise seems fair enough..

the feature race of the day here, and it looks very competitive.wells de lune should ensure, theres no hanging around, and hes much respected, but at the other end of the weights,MEGA DOUBLE makes just as much appeal.she seems to have turned a corner now, courtesy of her easy win in a novice hurdle at perth recently.so,from this mark, has a more than decent shout today..

Be interesting to see how El Terremoto goes in the Summer Plate after being sold, moving yards and having wind surgery. Will either run a stormer or a stinker <laugh>

PRESENT RANGER is going places at present, and may be rather underestimated by the handicapper,as a 7 lbr rise might not be enough to stop him doing the hat-trick today..

Not sure how they are describing the going at Newmarket as Good when I see how much they are kicking up, especially on the rise towards the finish.

    Global Gift
was wonderfully consistent: held up at the rear, asked to take closer order around two furlongs out, pushed along to hold on to last place, eased in the last furlong. :emoticon-0120-doh:

    well,here are my next two:

    cartmel,4 15:

ZOLFO was arguably very unlucky last time out, when falling with the race in his bag.he should gain compensation today,if showing no ill effects from that fall, especially,as hes able to run off the same mark today.the others have all a bit to prove on recent form..

    the curragh,4 35: MINSTREL STAKES

this features HEY GAMAN,who is one of my big favourites on the flat, and hes in great form so far this season, and has frankie dettori on board today, who has a perfect record on him..

Sparkle Roll didn't do much for Star Catcher's form this afternoon. I had her marked down as a filly to avoid after an appalling effort in the Musidora but she ran reasonably in the Ribblesdale. The soft going there may have helped Sparkle Roll there, as she looks as slow as a barge in her faster paces. I felt she was vulnerable as favourite today, especially with the ground being good but she got a hell of a thrashing and it didn't have anything other than a negative pointer to her stablemate's chances in the Irish Oaks.

Elsewhere The Tin Man ran like a horse gone at the game and it highlights the dearth of quality in the older sprinters. Jason Weaver stated that the 33/1 German winner was his highlight of the day but I reckon the race looks as whiffy as a year old kipper on a spoil heap myself. That has to be a major disappoint for a horse with the wins The Tin Man has had in the past.

I see Pistoletto was out in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh. He made heavy weather of winning at 1/5 last time in the Gustav Klimt race, a contest that has worked out terribly since. I did see a report at the time which stated that there was no reason to be concerned and that Pistoletto was firmly on course for Royal Ascot, where he was likely to take the world of beating in whichever race he was selected for. Sent off 9/4 favourite today he managed to beat only one home in 6th place. It just shows that if your gut instinct was that a horse looked disappointing then you should stay with that notion despite the "Experts" saying otherwise. The Anglesey was won by Roman Turbo who had beaten recent winner Howling Wolf into third on debut. Aidan's other colt Mount Fuji was also disappointing in the same race today, finishing 5th. He had previously been down the field in the Norfolk Stakes, a race that got a bit of a kicking when runner up and "Good thing" today Ventura Rebel was only 4th in the Super Sprint behind bargain basement buy Betty's Hope, who was rated 22 lbs behind the favourite on RPRs.

    the curragh,5 10: IRISH OAKS

well,it looks like there is very little between the main protagonists on recent form, but if FLEETING finally gets the breaks today, she could be the one.was really unlucky the last twice, everytime finishing with a flourish, after encountering traffic problems.big shout,if all goes well here..

Form an orderly queue to berate the jockeys on the placed horses in the Irish Oaks. They allowed Dettori a soft lead on the winner, he wound her up and went for home two furlongs out and none of them could get to her.

It was a Group 1 in name only but somebody had to win it. Well done to Star Catcher (and those who backed her!). Presumably she will head for the Yorkshire Oaks if her superstar stablemate heads for the Juddmonte International after the King George next Saturday.

Delighted with Star Catcher but Fleeting gifted her victory I felt. With the ground a lot faster than in the Ribblesdale Frankie probably wanted to make it a good tesr and they did get everything bar Fleeting in trouble as the race progressed. Fleeting finished with a good rattle and looked like grabbing it late on but she faltered when reaching Star Catcher's hind quarters and looked reluctant to pass.

Star Catcher has done well winning on the faster ground today and will be interesting for some other races in the autumn. The punters love Pink Dogwood but she seems the bookies pal with just two wins, both times at odds-on, in her career to date. Star Catcher was introduced into the Arc betting with Bet365 at 20/1 but that does not appeal to me.

Another Curragh classic won from the front, thats 100% made all in Irish classics this season, it really has become a conveyor belt of the highest order.

Fleeting was never going to overhaul Star Catcher. Dettori was only having to wave the whip to keep his idling filly going and could have pulled out more if the runner-up was challenging rather than just staying on.

If Enable routs the best of the older generation (as well as the three year olds) in the King George, there may not be a maximum field for the Arc this year unless Ballydoyle decide to run six or seven and try to play tactics.

All I can see stopping the treble right now is a heavy track and the race turning into a slog with victory to the horse with hooves like dinner plates. If it is heavy a few days before the race, I could see her being pulled and sent to the Breeders’ Cup. Gosden has pulled a Derby winner from a big race before...
