Dean Windass' Wembley winners medal went for £5,600 at the same auction, bought by Hull City owner Assem Allam.
My boyhood hero. He was never cautioned or sent off during his entire career, due to his philosophy of never kicking or intentionally hurting opposing players. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, he was nicknamed Il Gigante Buono â The Gentle Giant. The above taken from Wikipedia. What a great true sporting gentleman who is listed in the Football League100 Legends (Click the link to read about the full list.) How lucky we were to have him grace Elland Road.
don't know - 8 grand seems such a paltry amount for the effort JC would have put in to earn the medals in the first place - i'd like to think the swans or leeds would have seen fit to buy these treasures - if they didn't then, at this price - then shame on them (if they did then good on them)
I very much doubt that we've been in for them, sadly. Kinda sickens me than Windass' medals went for roughly the same amount! Shocking. I read somewhere (possibly Wikipedia but I can't be arsed to check now) that he got moved from CB to CF at the beginning of a season in Italy, and proceeded to score 40+ goals... epic.
http://thejohncharlesway.blogspot.com/2011/01/tribute-to-king.html I think it's just he was so good, that most people would select him in two positions in their all time team. Nice read above though. 65k transfer fee in 1957... how much would that be now?
Great little read about the man, so wish he was around to play today! can you imagine a 30 yard header being scored haha
Not a lot mate - but my original question was for real....I don't know much about his history and the time he spent with Leeds as it was way before my time !
There was a tv program that had an episode on him not so long ago. would recommend it to everyone. It was on BBC and it was called Welsh Greats: John Charles. Went through his enter life, was a brilliant piece of work.
I watched that shows how kind the guy was, he is a bigger hero in Juventus than he is over here! WOW what a guy, To not get a yellow card in his entire career is unbelievable. Tommy he one about as many as millwall whilst he was at leeds
I just found an online currency/time convertor, and apparently 65000 in 1955 would be worth about 1.1 million. Bargain.
It was great when they showed him returning to Italy later in life and the fans basically mobbed him. They loved him over there and it was astounding how much!
Ye when he went back to see all his old team mates, Im sure its on youtube clips about him aswell! I mean how much would someone who was world class CB and CF all in one be worth?100 million?
When John Charles fell on hard times later on in life (failed businesses, mainly due to his generosity) the Juve supporters club heard about it and organised an appeal.......such was the esteem he was held in they raised something like £10,000 after a home game......JC was too proud to take the money, so they paid it directly to one of of his creditors. A legend
I think you have to factor in a different level of inflation...otherwise known as the TV multiplier crossed with marketing and merchandise, which I believe nowadays is a factor of 100 (after calculating regular inflation) for all valuations of players from that era...this then brings a more realistic figure on what he would be worth in today's money!
Football transfer fees have gone so crazy that you can't really apply normal inflation guidelines or else JC would be worth about £7 million, which is ridiculous when you think of the money paid for the likes of Ronaldo, £100 million would seem about right for a world class striker AND a world class defender in the same player in todays crazy market.
