Me too, he can't be short of money, and going to China seems a strange move. The atmosphere out there at games is odd, and nothing like being in Europe. Not sure how long he will last there.
At least with Sunderland well away from the EPL now, he will be spared the abuse of them meeting each other in the league.
I don't think it's strange at all - I agree that he won't be short of money but, £12,000,000 basic salary a year sets him and his family up to for the rest of their lives ..... it really is a 'Kings ransom' of a wage; in the mad world of uncertainty that top level football management is it would have been nearly impossible to refuse.
That 12 million is after tax too. An absolute no-brainer even if only for 1 year. He'll always get a job back in Europe in the future. It would have been stupid to refuse i.m.o. Especially with the free takeaways thrown in
Me too, but - if you're an average working Joe with a 'fairly' comfortable life and £20 million drops in your lap then you/me would be completely satisfied - difference is Benitez has earned that £20 million, he has a different mindset to us - you've earned 20 mill and get the chance of another 24, 36, 48? Not easy to refuse is my guess.
If money is what drives you on then yes it's hard to resist but I can't see he'll get much else out of a year or 2 living in a bubble in China working with second rate footballers. I'm sure he could have got a £5-ish million gig around Europe where he might have been able to enhance his footballing credentials as well his bank balance.
It's patently obvious that the £12 million a year on offer is what's driving him? He'll set himself and his family up for life by living and working in a backwater for a couple of years before coming back to Europe to finish his career - a Champions League winning manger means he'll always find a good club.
Understand about the money but Working with second rate footballers is what nails it for me, you strive to be the best and work with the best Where’s the challenge
He's 60 years old, if he hasn't already set up his family and himself for life by now he must be a bit of a dud!
I'd like to set my grandchildren up for life if I had that option. And their grandchildren come to that. He's done the right thing.
Just read a novel, Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver. In it a young woman puts up a very stout case for not setting up our children/grandchildren for a life which is 'better' than ours. Rather we should be preparing them for life in a world which might be very different to the one we know and where money might not be the be all and end all it is now. All about environment, depletion of resources, over-consumption, etc. Interesting stuff but hey Rafa, go fill yer boots!
