With the other article about Tommy Wright it got me thinking about our academy Over the last 10 years we havent had many players from our academy break into the first team and actually hold down a shirt for a decent period of time. Andy King, Richard Stearman and Joe Mattock about the only players who have. People like Conrad Logan, James Wesolowski, Max Gradel, Matt Heath, Chris O'Grady, Levi Porter, Ashley Chambers, Tommy Wright, Jonathon Stevenson, Alan Sheehan plus many more have come in a played a decent role but not managed to hold down shirts for a long period and was nothing more then squad players. Levi Porter had a shirt for a few months and then we didnt see much of him again. Chris O'Grady was prolific in league 2 while Max did a good job for Leeds but has now moved on to bigger things There was Matt Piper and if we didnt have the money troubles who knows how far he would of went as he didnt want to leave but didnt have much choice. And then he had the knee injury and had to retire. Hopefully Jeff Schlupp can do the same as Andy King and get into the team and hold down a shirt as his own. So how far do you think Schlupp will go and apart from Gradel do you think we missed out on any of the players please log in to view this image
I always rated Alan Sheehan, but I suppose since leaving he hasn't really hit any real heights, playing for Leeds and Swindon Town. Had a cracking left foot though. Actually, it's interesting, looking at that list, just how many injury-prone players our Academy has produced in recent years. Wesolowski, Porter and Ashley Chambers all had at least one long-term injury whilst they were with us. Same with Piper, obviously. And I seem to remember Matt Heath getting injured quite a bit under Micky Adams. Hopefully Schlupp won't follow that particular trend...
