I think the fundamental point being made in the article has some merit, but this then touches on one of my biggest criticisms of people in this country and that is, it is up to individuals to take responsibility for their actions and not to blame anybody else. The reason that we have got a deal with a gambling firm is basic economics no doubt, they would pay the most and we should therefore take advantage of that opportunity. As Canary Dave says quite rightly, had we not taken the Dafabet deal would that have had any impact on whether our fans would gamble or not? Look at World Snooker, the World Championships were sponsored for years by cigarette companies and now also by gambling firms, it is a commercial decision. Will it get worse? Probably not as yesterday William Hill announced closing hundreds of high street shops due to changes in the way firms can operate machines, putting a limit on the bet. If that spreads, then the amount that the industry can spend on things like shirt sponsorship will reduce and then another sector will take over the scene. Who might that be? Would the author of the EDP article be happier if it was some USA tec giant who does not pay any UK tax? Might it be a firm that has sugar in its products with links to obesity? There is no easy solution but to blame Norwich City is in my opinion ridiculous.
Ultimately, he's asking us to take a silly moral stance. What next? Should the club stop selling pints and pies because of alcoholism and obesity? Why not go vegan as a club? Surely we must be responsible for forcing ethics onto 26000 people every 2nd week. In a perfect world we could all have nice moral advertisers, but to disadvantage ourselves as a club to be some kind of moral police is just daft nanny statism. If someone is going to gamble it is likely in their nature to have done so, the advertising may just mean they pick one bookie rather than another. It's a little late for Downs to have a winge too. With Leovegas last year and bookies in the actual ground, I think any morals against gambling have long since left the building. Bah!
Gambling has been around for centuries, as I'm sure so have gambling addicts (in the same way as we've alcohol and drug addicts) and by Ben accepting an inferior deal to appease the likes of Steve makes no sense in this day and age. According to the EDP poll on the subject earlier in the week, fans are split roughly 50/50 (if you leave out the 'don't cares!!'). IMO, best we accept it or don't buy a replica shirt if you're that bothered about it!!!
Over the years I have purchased shirts with Proton, Lotus and Flybe on them (air polluters), Fosters Lager (alcohol), Leo Vegas (Gambling) and will buy a Dafabet one if the design is good.
Yeah, pretty much the point I made. I see it as not Ideal, but necessary. Can't blame the Norwich board. We need to earn every penny we have.
Less than two (2) hours until we can all see what piece of yellow viscose we'll be shelling £73 out on this season
Hmmm..... Fantastic video. I was worried about the kit, I didn't think it would live up to last seasons.... It's not bad. Not wowed by it. Compared to our last few Premiership strips, it's not as bad as some of them.
Keep looking at it, trying to let it sink in. It might look better as a top, if you don't have the green shorts. A lot of dark green going on. That might be putting me off a bit. It's not as bright and exciting as the last strip. It is growing on me though.
Looking forward to seeing the new kit replicating this fine pose from Emi please log in to view this image
Hmm, nice pic Cromer, been trying to find other Images apart from the Pukki one. I love a bright Norwich strip with plenty of yellow. Seeing that in the sunshine is a joy. But, from that Emi picture, this kit could look pretty snazzy under the floodlights.
