Anybody else picked up on the mutterings that Torreira seeks a return to Italy?

I don’t think there’s anything to it tbh. It all came from an interview where he was asked how he was finding it in England and he said that it’s been really difficult and he’s found it hard to adjust to life in England as he doesn’t speak the language and the weather is crap.

But he said that he’s committed to adapting to life here, hasn’t stopped the rags picking up on it and spinning a story out of it though.

Not if we keep lowballing them, we won't.

They have an asking price of £25m, we bid £15m, they turn it down.
They have an asking price of £25m, we then bid £18m with some add-ons, they turn it down for the second time.

If we don't put in a proper bid, at least within the £20m+ mark, then they may get hacked off and think we're messing them around.
I'd prefer if we could put in a proper bid to begin with if we are that desperate to sign him.

I think Tierney would be a class addition, but we need to show we are serious. Sanllehi cannot afford to mess this up.

I just want us to get this deal done now. It would be so typically Arsenal to miss out because we've bid too low and then tell everybody we've moved onto another target.

Tierney is a quality player who could really develop into one of the best at Arsenal. £20m isn't a huge fee for a young and proven LB.

    JUST GET IT DONE !

If Tottenham beat us to signing Saliba I'm gonna be pissed.

I'm 99.5% sure this kid is going to be a World Class centre-back.

Apparently, to ward off Spurs, we have now met St Etienne's asking price of £27m, but will loan him back for the season.

Seems like a lot of money for an 18 year old that won't even be playing for us next season. We still need a CB to come in this season too.

It does seem like that when our budget is small but £30m for a player with Van Dijk/Varane type ability is actually a bargain.

We need a Ramsey replacment at CM, 1-2 CB's, a Leftback, possibly a Wellbeck replacement and a backup Keeper.
I'm suprised we havnt seen more outgoings to fund potential signing soo far. If the 45m budget is actually true I would be amazed if they manage to fix all our problem areas this window.

    Based on what evidence?

In any event word from our camp is that we're just doing it to piss you guys off. We already have 2 young CB's in Sanchez and Foyth who still need time to develop; I don't see the sense in signing another one. If Toby leaves chances are we'll look to someone with more experience than Saliba's 16 games. Joachim Andersen of Sampdoria is the name that keeps circling to land, so we'll see where that one goes. Can't say I'm all that excited by that either as on his day Toby is one of the best in the world in his position. So is Vertonghen, who may well retire back to Ajax at the end of this coming season. We need to sign established players in their prime to replace those two, not young prospects.

    Anyone seen Ornstein’s latest tweets?

    If you haven’t:

    • Zaha wants to move to us, and we want to sign him, but Palace want £80m for him and we aren’t willing to pay that.
    • It’s understood that if we had qualified for the CL, we would be able to afford Zaha, but as we haven’t, a deal is not likely to happen.
    • Milan’s interest in Torreira is genuine but we are not interested in selling him and he is not believed to be “unhappy” contrary to reports.
    • We are still in talks with Tierney and Saliba over transfers to Arsenal.

Well I am a strength and conditioning coach. Firstly the kid is a true athlete. 6'4 (may still grow a little) He's unusually quick for a big powerful guy and despite all that he's also technically excellent.
He does remind me a little of Van Dijk in his Celtic days - only he has a more rapid turn of pace.
Explosive, good in the air, big, intimidating.. all the things you would want in a TOP modern centreback.

I like Anderson too - but I think Saliba is the better talent.

His physique is certainly scary for such a young guy. Maybe I'm just quibbling over your use of the 'world class' label, which I feel is used far too casually these days but...the bloke has played a dozen or so games for a semi-decent team in a crap league. The same league that made George Kevin N'Koudou look like the second coming of Ferenc Puskas.

If we were talking about De Ligt (who is only a year older than Saliba), I'd be in full agreement. But for now I'd be more than happy to see you spend north of £25m on an 18 year old with 15 games under his belt then loan him back so that the rest of us can enjoy another year of Shkodran Mustafi's Travelling Circus <ok>

Saw that Zaha one earlier. I'd love to have him at Arsenal, I think he'd be a sensation. But we ain't paying £80m or even £60m for him, so unless he really agitates for a move and we can offer Palace one or two of our players plus cash, then I can't see it happening.

Well Yes.. De Ligt is already what most would consider 'World Class' which is outrageous at that age. Going to be interesting to follow over his career. (potenially one of the best ever?)

Of course you never truely know with players of this age. Injuries and lifestyle can destroy all that potential.

Going to have to disagree again here I'm afraid. He really isn't. Insanely talented and with ridiculous leadership qualities for a player so young but he's 19 years of age and plays like he is.

Case in point: Ajax v Spurs CL semi final 2nd leg. You're 55 minutes into the game, 3-0 up on aggregate with an away goal and you're playing at home. What do you want to see your captain and talisman doing? Keeping a tight line and shutting down the game, I'd imagine. It's what most of us would do in a similar situation. Make sure no one gets dragged out of position and just kill the game off for all of 35 minutes.

Danny Rose picks up the ball deep inside our half, nutmegs Ajax's right winger who is also their second most forward player, drifts a beautiful ball into Dele, suddenly it's 4 against 3 for Spurs and none of the Ajax defenders are quick enough to get to Moura who pounces to score and get us back into the game.

The player Rose nutmegged to get the move going was De Ligt. 60 yards out of position and on the wrong side of the pitch. That is criminally poor. "World class" defenders just don't do that. Which is why i say he is currently an exceptionally promising 19 year old, nothing more nothing less. Given the right coaching and support he will probably be world class in 3 to 4 years.

Mate every player makes mistakes. He is already 10 x times the defender say Anderwereild is and the guy is improving all the time. (a guy considered one of the best in the EPL)
Look John Terry and Stephen Gerrard for example. Both Premierleague players tauted as World Class. Both had moments where they got forward - totally abandoning their positions and won the game for their sides.

There's a risk to playing like this and both Liverpool and Chelsea have lost games because of that compulsion.
It's the same for DeLigt. He is capable of winning a game on his own (despite being a CB!) but that recklessness will cost his side sometimes too.

You can't be serious with that statement. Come on now.

He has the potential to be better, sure, but you cannot sit there and say right now De Light is a superior defender to Alderweireld. No way Jose.

He was at fault for our 3rd goal too as he let Llorente get to Sissoko's hopeful punt first, but I'll leave off on that one.

The fact that a 19 year old exhibits signs of inexperience shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. I guess watching Mustafi every week has completely warped Bear's interpretation of what 'world class' constitutes.

    From Twitter:

Unai Emery has decided after the Europa League final that time is up with Mustafi and he should be sold [@bbcsport_david via @5liveSport].

Although this is good to hear that he recognises Mustafi isn't the required standard, the problem is there are no suitors and he is on big money. He won't be easy to shift.
