On Bertrand, the two years left on his contract is massively relevant if only because it gives us options. If RH feels that Targett is ready or has a replacement in mind he thinks are a good fit, or if Bertrand really wants to leave, it means that we will get a fair price for a 29 year old fringe international left back. I've quite quickly reached a point where I really trust RH to know what's best for the team and the squad and, for Bertrand, this will likely be his last chance at playing Champions League football etc - so I can imagine his head is already turned. I'm confident our squad will be better this September than it was last year. ..and god knows the manager will be....and I'm usually a pessimist!
Is it unjustified to say I don’t think he’s that good? He gets no abuse from me, yet I think he’s no more than ok. I’d like us to have someone better, more at Ryan’s level.
Has Bertrand declined, or have the team been poor? Tadic declined too.... there’s a pattern forming here.
I'm alot more concerned having Targett play WB than Ten Valery... He has no pace and looks very clumsy in defense at this level.
Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Bednarek, Hojbjerg, Valery, Long. All players who dramatically improved under Ralph. As I said before, Bertrand remained average.
Agree, I think personally if we are going to ship out RB, We could still cash in on MT, He just doesn't cut for me at this level. I'd Rather see someone new come in, But perhaps RB hasn't been performing because he knows, Even at his poorest he has no one to challenge him at all for that LB berth.
My take on it is that Bertrand hasn't been particularly good for a while and turning 30 in a couple of months means he isn't going to be worth much in a year or so. Saying that, he is clearly our best LB and if we sold all our players at 30 we would lack any sort of experience. If it is about raising funds for other transfers I would sooner look to sell Targett for 8-10m IF that is an option.
Yeah, to be blunt, even if Bertrand's on his way...I'd still sell Targett, and use the money on a good replacement.
In summary - all IMO, of course: - Bertrand is not as good as he once was - I would not begrudge him a move if he wants one - But I would rather he chose to stay with us - If he does want a move, we need a new left-back - Matt Targett isn't good enough to be first choice
The other factor of course is Jake Vokins, who has had an excellent season in the league-winning U23’s. If Ralph thinks he’s good enough to step up, then he most certainly is, even at 19.
Am I the only one who though targett looked decent last season? And that comes as someone who previously thought McQueen was better.
Targett is an ok player but I don’t see much more than that if we are a team with defensive issues. If we’re on the front foot more, he maybe ok. Take the Derby game away, where their young winger destroyed him. I fear for him against speedy, skilful, wide players and that is something that most PL teams want to have.
