For every Phillip Heise on the left, there's a replacement Max Aarons on the right, if you know where to look and I have no doubt the scouting team and SW are 'on it' just in the event of a worst case (for our current squad set up) scenario. It would be dilatory if they weren't! [Or delinquent, to quote David McNally!]
I was going to post this same argument, but won't bother now. If Newcastle loses Benitez, they could also be in trouble again. We have a solid squad going into the season with little gelling required. Roberts has added to that and hopefully Rhodes will be back again when Bruce gets real. With another RB and one or two more players we'll be ready to go from the off.
Newcastle are a complete unknown at the moment, they could have billionaire owners soon ready to try to turn the club into the next Man City
Aston Villa are going to spend big by the look of things, whilst never a guarantee it will mean that they bring in some quality. New striker signed yesterday for £22m Reportedly after Butland for a similar figure and have signed last seasons loanee El Ghazi
I wasn't that impressed with Butland last season. The last I heard, their best loanee (Abrahams) won't be available as Chelski want him back!!!
That could be why Villa are signing a £22m striker. Spending big could pay off or it could backfire as GE says, going the way of Fulham. They released 8 players after promotion and will have a lot of gelling as they take on the PL, whereas we have a settled squad champing at the bit to carry on from last season, when we finished 18 points above Villa. Meanwhile Drmic's availability on a free transfer has been confirmed: https://readnorwich.com/2019/06/14/eberl-confirms-drmic-exit-from-monchengladbach/ Whilst not exciting maybe, acquiring an experienced international striker/WAM on a free could suit our budget and his ability to play out wide could be useful. Being right-footed, he'd offer another option on the left. It's possible that DF could do for him what he's done for Leitner, Stiepermann, Trybull and Vrancic. Much will depend on his wages and the physical assessment after his injuries last season. Given that Pukki will be our top striker, I could see this happening.
I guess we will find out which strategy will work better, spending millions or keeping the squad togetherness. Would be great if we finish above Villa though.
To be fair to villa they could not stay as was, firstly with loanee returns but also with the fact that they are coming up 5th best side, they are further from a PL side than we are. I think they are buying relatively well. Hungry players used to English football who are itching to get their chance in the PL, whether for the first time or like Butland to get back to where he belongs and prove himself again for England. Bah!
Fair comment General, but I think until we turned up at Villa Park, they'd gone 12 games unbeaten, winning 10. Remember NCFC of old - whenever a team was on a losing streak, they played us and they won. This last season however ......
At this rate, it won't be long until the currently vacant Matt Jarvis ward is booked solid again https://readnorwich.com/2019/06/14/eberl-confirms-drmic-exit-from-monchengladbach/
Erm, wouldn't a right back be slightly more of a priority? https://www.completesports.com/norwich-city-eager-to-sign-collins-from-paderborn/
I'm pretty sure SW isn't going to take any chance of another Jarvis. All players get injuries, but to balance that, there's an opportunity to get a 26 year old striker/AM with Bundesliga experience on a free. In addition to backing up Pukki, he could also back up Hernandez and Buendia. The risks seem low to me but the potential rewards could be very high and we could recruit Rhodes or another striker as well.
Meanwhile, Marvin Bakalorz, the Bundesliga DM, has surfaced again underlined by DF's presence with the former Hannover coach. https://norwich.vitalfootball.co.uk/norwich-in-three-way-tussle-for-bundesliga-midfielder/ Again available on a free transfer, this could also prove to be good business if it happens.
Completely agree... didn't we buy a back up LB in Jan? Aarons can play LB so id say cover for him would be a bigger priority!
A new name on the striker front: ://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/canaries-transfer-rumours-nuno-da-costa-1-6108205 We certainly need another striker, but I'm not sure why we'd pay £5m for da Costa. At 28 he hasn't shown much evidence of being a PL level striker. I'd rather go for the 26 year old Drmic on a free transfer and get Rhodes or another as well for that kind of money.
Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa are supposedly available from Wolves, probably out of our price range though. I’d love Morgan Gibbs White on Lon if he was available, he looks a really player
