To be honest, I can't stand the bloke myself. I am and always was in debt to Johnny Marr more than anything, even though The Smiths songs are not bettered anywhere by anyone and were written by the daft ****. I've seen Morrissey live solo many times in venues of various sizes and the last couple of offerings were just ****e, despite him including more Smiths stuff. I've seen him do some superb shows though, his talent is undeniable. Never really 'liked' him though, always found him to be strange, to put it mildly. Anyone ever read (endured) his book by the way? That's a year (as it felt like it took that long) of my life I'll never get back. I didn't even finish the ****er. You can all 'over rate' Morrissey as much as you like but The Smiths are still the finest band known to man.
And if we were talking under rated I'd include Andy Rourke. People **** over Peter Hook - Smiths' best baselines were every bit as good and are hardly ever mentioned.
True, it got to no2 in 1977 too. But was banned from being played on the Radio. Agree about The Smiths too, seminal band and era defining. But Morrissey is a massive ****.
