Here’s a short film exploring the history of the Irish border since 1921 and the difficulties of finding any solution that doesn’t upset anyone!

That will never happen, because under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement both North and South have to agree on the nature of the border by referendum. Only a minority of Unionists in the North would vote for a wall.

Can I ask how did we man those borders years ago?
It is quite a few years since I was there it is true but I don’t remember there being any armed guards or even police on all the roads going over the border. Even as a boy I remember going to one of the houses where I seem to remember an uncle telling me not to go to the bottom of the Garden as technically it was in Republic of Ireland!! I obviously didnt know what the hell they were talking about. I am talking about the early 50s to late 50s true........

I would say that those entering the country illegally, or even those overstaying their visa ( and I know a lot, even my mother in law) does a lot of damage to the image of those that entered the country legally and work legally in sectors that the country is crying out for.

That is a good idea. I had a quick look at the reception notice board this morning, looking for a certificate of insurance, but couldn’t see one. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that they had to be prominently displayed.
As it happens the insurance company, whoever they might be, will be getting a phone call to prepare them for an investigation into an accident, yesterday, that could have caused a fatality, involving a visiting driver.
First response paramedics called in an ambulance and also the air ambulance.
Health and Safety Executive were expected today.
This is on top of another accident, involving a failure of equipment and another visiting driver and a head injury.
Hopefully the company will be slaughtered.

Until the 60’s there wasn’t much of a problem, but then there was a trade war between Britain and Eire which meant the border was policed on both sides, with customs checks and all the usual border officialdom. The troops only came in in 1969, which was the beginning of the Troubles.

A bit of Pro-EU propaganda. Or information. Warning - Farage and Johnson put in an appearance. Stephen Fry narrates:

Like I said to my relative this morning - a lot of people got conned through poor information. He said that if he'd known what he knows now he would never have voted Leave. Thing was, he never went to check that what he was being told was true. Oh, and he used to be another Daily Express reader too [hadn't counted him]. Not anymore, from what I gather. :1980_boogie_down:

Sad but true I don’t read very many newspapers now. My wife is an infrequent mail reader. We get most of our news from the Mac or iPad . I do have a hell of a lot of telephone conversations though through out the EU. From family, or business acquaintances and friends certainly on a weekly basis. I’m being told this whole saga is causing a fair amount of distress through the EU especially Germany and Poland. Which kind of surprises me and I too am leaning on the side of perhaps this is not the right thing. As I have said many times when I voted I didn’t believe in a million years we would get the vote. I wouldn’t have voted at all I don’t think if I knew it would lead to this kind of trouble. I have sympathy for the younger generation although there are some on here that don’t think so. If it is genuinely only the old gits like me that have voted out Then perhaps we should let them (the youngsters) have their way. It is after all going to be them that have to deal with any consequences
Perhaps I shouldn’t have voted as I have said my reasons for out are very personal. They are just not open for general discussion. People may think what the hell they like as to my reasons for this. I am grateful though to the few that respect my view even though they might disagree with some of my fears about the EU.However no amount of insults name calling or whatever will ever change my mind. That by the way is no dig at you TSS you have always made good and decent points as have quite a few others.

It wasn’t your fault mate, it was David Cameron’s. He never should have asked the audience in the first place

But you don't see Trump declaring a National Emergency in order to deport VISA overstays, even though in the US they significantly outnumber border crossers. At the same time he is trying to ban legal travel to the US from Muslim countries.

If Trump went out tomorrow and said "I want to build a wall and decrease illegal immigration, but I want to make the legal immigration process much easier and increase the amount of immigration overall" he would lose the vast majority of his support. His approval rating would be in the teens. He knows this, his supporter know this.

We all know that that when Trump says "immigrants" he's not really talking about illegal immigrants or legal immigrants, or really immigrants at all. So when Trump says "immigrants" are bad, we on the left counter with "No, immigrants are no different than you or me." We both know we aren't really talking about immigrants.

But on the off-chance that perhaps he really is just mistaken in his facts or that if his coded wording is exposed it will shame people into not supporting him as a racist we point out how his facts on "immigration" are wrong. But of course he knows exactly what he's doing and he's not interested in either facts or immigration, and the people who vote for him also know exactly what he's really saying and that's exactly why they voted for him. So, in the end it's a rather silly game.

Visa over stayers are really hard to find, they basically have to caught breaking the law, which is how a lot of Mexicans are caught as they do like to drink and drive. The only 3 options open to Trump are first of all building a barrier, as border patrol wanted and all Dems wanted until it was Trumps slogan, but now the Looney left would turn on any Dem that said they wanted a barrier, second would be e verify and heavily fine anyone that employed an illegal, and thirdly it would be tax any monies sent out of the country to try and remove the incentive of illegally entering the country

We are all Europeans. If you are born here, or moved here at an early age you are European. Last I looked the UK was geographically a part of Europe so, politics aside, we are European. So is Mo Farah, Johanna Konta, Moeen Ali, Beddy, Imps, Me, Farage, Lammy,
