Before it hit his arm which was still stuck out. If that had involved City I would have wanted a penalty, as no doubt everyone else on here.
Because people are claiming he was aiming for him in order to get a penalty. Which is jolly unsporting and not cricket.
Ah I think it’s simply playing to the rules so no problem for me Same as deliberately kicking it at someone to get a throw in
Having not seen it, I would get up at 3 am to watch City but not Liverpool or Spurs, then I didn't miss much by all accounts. As far as it goes delighted for Robbo, and at least an English team won it again.
By the current rules of the game it was a penalty. Playing for such by kicking the ball towards a defenders arm is increasingly becoming a tactic because of the current interpretation of the rules and VAR. Increasingly we are seeing defenders challenging with both arms behind their backs, like a member of the royal family inspecting a phalanx of minor foreign dignitaries. It looks silly and isn’t particularly effective. Two things seem to have been forgotten recently. Firstly handball should be hand to ball and not ball to hand and secondly handball needs to be intentional. Referees, fourth officials and VAR deliberators would do well to remember this.
It was blocking the trajectory of the ball as it was in an unnatural position and wouldn’t have hit his arm after being deflected if not in that position. Not that I am particularly bothered but if that incident had happened in a City game we would all have been shouting for a penalty not telling the ref he shouldn't give it,
“Unnatural position” is one of the most meaningless & stupidest phrases in football. Some natural arm positions An unnatural arm position
That is what it is based on nowadays. VAR confirmed the decision. As I keep saying if that had happened in a Vity game no one would have objected and shouting at the referee that he had got it wrong.
Just emptied my bucket. Thank god AJ is still world champion or the weekend would be a complete right off.
From the angle the ball was kicked it was more likely to end up in the centre circle than the centre of the penalty area. May be a slight exaggeration there but the ball would have gone outside the penalty area if the defender had not been in the way. please log in to view this image
It’s what the pundits use as another buzz phrase for the armchair enthusiasts & Vloggers. If your arm isn’t broken it’s in a natural position. Considerations for handball are, as Ernie said, the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand), the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball) & that the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence. I don’t think, based on the rules, that it was a penalty. I agree at a City game I would have been shouting loudest for a pen.
How someone like Hoddle can say it was not a penalty is ridiculous. The facts are the referee gave it, Var checked it and BTs referee agreed. But then who did Hoddle play for? I normally like Hoddle but he made himself look a bit of a twat last night.
