Strewth......I was at that game too.........Standing besides a pillar I think.........The chap that was with me passed away just a week ago, strange as we were only talking about that game a couple of days before he passed.........Good and great atmosphere at the Dell even if you couldn't see the match.
All action happened behind a pillar at the Dell. Everyone would disappear from view and the crowd would roar and you'd be left going, 'What? What?'
I remember that game well, it was probably the only time I ever didn’t mind Saints being beaten, by a team with so many truly great players.
I was once given someone's season ticket seat with a friend for one match can't remember who it was against but it was in the West Stand upper tier right near the Milton near the player's tunnel. Saints kicked towards the Archers for the first half and destroyed the other team scoring four goals, unfortunately the entire penalty area was obscured by a pillar and I never saw any of them!. Me an my mate were rubbing our hands at the prospect of the bucketload that we were going to see with our perfectly unobstructed view of the Milton goal and of course you guessed it, we never scored another goal..... Just found the match in December 1980, I thought it was Leicester... https://www.worldfootball.net/report/premier-league-1980-1981-southampton-fc-leicester-city/ The "45" after the scorer's name just means it was scored in the first 45 minutes.
Sorry mate ......I think some of it is to wind up the saint fans that have been giving him ****.......booing etc but he is looking likely to going to Villa though.
I think Austin doesn't suit our style now, but he's scored goals for us....perhaps not enough, but neither have a lot of other players. Never, never boo your own player.
Charlie Austin, I assume. When he arrived at Saints I was pleased because he was undoubtedly a good addition. Addition, NOT replacement. There were some I believe who thought he'd be a goal machine. I never thought he'd be overly prolific. As the lead striker for a team in the PL, that team was always going to be a struggler, with teammates of Charlie's calibre. But none the less, as an impact sub, Charlie was/is fine, provided you've got the team around him. Back when he made his debut, we did. We don't anymore, and it wasn't long before the best strikers made for the exit. Turned out all along that he was being groomed as a replacement. Total error, whoever counted on that one. Saints - trying to do things on a shoestring again.
Yeah that’s very true. TBH, seating virtually killed the Dell & although I never stopped attending during the seat days, my overriding memory of the Dell is standing, squashed like sardines & hardly a view. Brilliant times & as said before; evening games..... wow, just wow.

The thing that you have to remember about Austin is that he was cheap. He only cost one Charlie Austin. Carillo was 5 Charlie Austins
