Intrigued to see the video clip of the fans' altercations with Lee Cattermole. I cannot make out anyone kicking the player but it is a surprise that neither the stewards or police intervened. Unfortunately the clip only serves to reinforce the stereotype many Saints supporters have of Pompey fans whereas some like Messrs :Meowth and Lapras are probably more typical and genuine supporters whose comments add value to this board. It is quite funny how Saints and Pompey fans react to each other. Most "adult" fans are able to rib each other without animosity and the exchange of comments can be amusing. I have worked in Portsmouth on a number of projects in the past and have experienced both. Once, in HMS Nelson navy dockyard a police car pulled alongside me at the checkpoint and the officer asked me to wind my window down. I though he was going to caution me for playing my music too loud but instead started to take the mickey out of me because I had a Southampton air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. I hadn't thought about that. A few months later it prompted a similar incident whilst driving to a project in Leigh Park when someone sat on my tail for about 1/2 mile and giving me the bird in an aggressive and threatening manner. It was only when I had pulled in to site that I twigged he has seen the air freshener with his eagle eyes. The first incident made me smile whereas the second was intimidating.
If you spend some time in Petersfield, you'll probably see John walking around, in garb like this. He really is one of life's eccentrics. He's a smashing chap too.
Apparently he wasn't so enlightened many years back when a Saints supporting friend put in a fake call to his bookshop. However, I understand that he is something on an authority on old books and is alleged to have Prince Charles as a client. Not sure how true the latter is. I like the photo of him where they photo-shopped him wearing red and white.
It's definitely worth paying him a visit Ian, he has some fine first editions, of really vintage books and does indeed, know his onions. At night, when the shop is shut, the foyer is left open to all and you can fill a bag with old books and leave whatever you can afford, in the honesty jar.
I'm not feeling sorry for the soap dodgers at all. This is not a time to be reasonable, I'm enjoying their pain.
Can`t remember if I`ve fessed up before but here goes - I`m responsible for the Skates still being in existence. Ian StJohn, who was their manager, got Celtic to play a fund raising end of season friendly at nottarF kraP at the end of the 75-76 season, because they were on the bones of their arse. I paid good money to see Celtic win 6-1. I only remember a couple of things about the game - Chris Kamara coming on as a sub, and the local fans chanting `Jock Straps, Jock Straps.....` - charming, since the Sweaties were helping them out! Seems from last nights` exhibition that some of the locals still lack a bit of sophistication !
I wrote earlier in the year about the nightmare of having the Scousers, Dirty Leeds and the Skates on top of their respective divisions and they all ****ed it up in the end... #allswellthatendswell And Lincoln came through for Imps. Just for good measure Torquay and Sholing finished as Champions in their leagues as well...
