I understand exactly where you're coming from as I've always had a soft spot for Doris since I was a kid and whilst my parents were not big music fans they had an original copy of Move over darling on 7" which I used to play on their old Dansette back in the day. Now I'm really feeling old!
The following is a playlist of bands who won't be enjoying Premier League football next season thanks to Derby's second leg victory...
40 years to the day, electronic Elvis enters the building, and everything changes forever. This particular clip is chosen as the beginning puts it all in context ...
Today is Paul Wellers 61st Birthday, probably the best songwriter of his generation and in my opinion 1 of the greatest ever. As we approach the the 3rd decade of the 21st century it is rather depressing that songs Weller wrote in the 1970s and 80s remain relevant to the world we live in today.
Better late than never...some footage from The Undertones gig a few weeks ago at The Electric Ballroom. I've been in Spain working and there was a real lag in people posting these 2 tracks (the only 2 to appear so far). I think that they're supporting the Specials in some of their 40th Anniversary gigs? Sounds like a great night.
Having dealt with AOB, it's back to the business of The Damned. The extremely few gigs they're playing in the UK this time around, will include the whole of Machine Gun Etiquette, which is celebrating its 40th birthday. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER they are going to play 'These Hands' live. I know a number of people who ****ing hate this (including Mrs B) but I love it and it will be great to 'tick it off' the scorecard. Here it is for those who haven't had the pleasure before... ...and here is the t shirt, which is priced at an eye watering £24.99. please log in to view this image ....I guess that's what birthdays and Fathers' Day is for.
I've added the second track, Jimmy Jimmy........what a pillock! Luckily no sign of my balding bonce in the heaving throng. During the week in Spain, I burned my bald spot for the first time.....
Many moons ago me and a mate used to watch the Street band in the pubs around St Albans and Luton , we got to know them and they were about to make their one and only album, they got a gig at the Music Machine in Camden and we helped them set up the stage, this shady looking bloke produced a big roll of money and asked if his band could headline plus more if they could use the bands PA system , they agreed and played their set to the likes of a very stoned Nick Kent and C S M and the band was the Damned, a nurse, vampire and a rat like bloke on drums. Street band recorded Toast and broke up, Lead singer Paul Young formed the Q tips and then went solo and the rest is history with the Damned
It did them little good. Despite being the best musicians in the Punk world and creating 4 classic albums, the band have taken 40 years to start to get anything approaching their due. CSM particularly laid into them. He and the music press in general, didn't like the fact that they weren't pretending to be anything other than a chaotic booze fuelled rock and roll band. The dressing up didn't help either...although Angus dressing as a schoolboy never got the same journalistic ****. I loved The Clash and The Pistols and many of the others but for shear entertainment, The Damned took/take some beating on their better nights. When pissed up, they can be shambolic and a bit crap...but it's all part of the fun. They've also had some weird fans, seeing Robert Fripp on stage with them still takes some believing. Anyway, Long Live The Damned! P,s. I saw Q Tips at Nottingham University in 1980 and loved them. Also, I loved Pino Palladdino's playing with Paul Young and subsequently.
