robert palmer played albermarle youth club with a band called marmaduke[/QUOTE] Palmer's band was called the Mandrakes. Used to know Alan (his name then, he changed to Robert when he joined The Alan Bown Set). A school mate joined the Mandrakes when the lead guitarist, best one round here, and one the Who and Jimi Hendrix praised after they played with them left. Saw that lead guitarist in the Scarborough paper a couple of years ago playing in a fundraiser. Stopped playing for years when he left the Mandrakes. I remember when my lad was learning to play the guitar and went with him to buy one. Got talking to the guitar shop owner and discussing local guitarists. Said I thought Pete Liley, who played for a group called the Moonshots (whose singer later had a hit with The Smoke) before joining the Mandrakes. He said not long before he had been at a concert featuring all the local bands and someone had spotted Pete Liley in the audience. The compered asked him to get up on stage. The young bands obviously didn't have a clue who he was. He said no, he hadn't played in ages. The compere kept pressing him. A lad stood next to the guitar shop owner said to him he could borrow his guitar. Lilely got on stage and played. The lad turned round and said he was giving up. Not only couldn't he play like this bloke who hadn't played for years, he didn't know you could get a sound like that out of his guitar.
