Mer Et Nuages ran really well in a race where it seemed Plumatic simply swooped late and picked them off. Early warm favourite Polydream was disappointing, while Crisford's Ostilio was woeful in last place as 5/2 second favourite. I backed Mer Et Nuages at 10/1 and he was returned at 9/2. No cigar but beating SP is always useful because it minimises stakes to win the same amount.

Roman Candle did win, albeit narrowly, the favourite was poor value to me and he was well beaten off in third. He traded as 3/5 Fav at one stage but was beaten more than 3 lengths in 3rd place.

Calyx was the performer of the day. He thrashed his field at Ascot despite fluffing the start completely. The Commonwealth Cup is his to win barring injury or a cock up from Teddy Grimthorpe. I felt Signora Cabello would drift and she went from 10/3 to 12/1, touching 16/1 at one stage. She actually ran OK without ever threatening but fillies like her struggle every season from early 2YO days to 3YO debuts. It seemed amateurish for Francesca Cumani to be puzzling over why the filly was such a big price. This was a one horse race and surely a 120+ performance. Calyx looks the best sprinter full stop, not just the best 3YO sprinter. I think he will win the July Cup if he stays sound.
