I won't quote Mr Quill cos of the spoiler, but I also worked it out before the end, but it was still a shocker when it happened. I agree about the heroes you mentioned.
I didn't see that coming at ALL I was completely gob smacked. I'll also 3rd the heros. I lost some of my favs in this episode. I feel like the rest of this Season (yes I said season) has turned 90 degrees to where I expected and I love it.
Spoiler: GoT spoilers Rewatched it this evening, it might've been better than the first watch as I was able to analyse what was gonig on more. Still absolutely devastated my joint-favourite character (with Jaime) in Theon died. His redemption arc was on a par with Jaime's, and he went out like an absolute hero, knowing he had no chance of surviving but fighting to the end regardless. Beric and Jorah going out big losses for me too, both of them great characters, particularly Jorah who has been around since the very first episode. Lyanna was a great later season addition too. Arya is the ****ing man. She's gonna tear Cersei to shreds. Also, one final point - the music. My ****ing god. Those last 20 minutes were absolutely beautiful.
Well I thought that was an absolute ****ter. Feels like a decade of plot in the making just had a pigeon land on the board, knock over all the pieces and **** everywhere
Spoiler Likewise, but not for the right reasons. Winter is coming, the long night is upon us. Didn’t even make it past winterfel and lasted one measly evening. Too many hopeless main characters survived, Jon Snow has been built for that episode and did absolutely **** all. The battle for the iron throne should have been solved first, with this impending ****storm closing in on them all. If it had to be this way, Winterfel should have fallen save for a select few who managed to escape, air lifted out by dragon or whatever. The night king should be on his way to Kings Landing right now with an even bigger army and Cersei should be touching cloth. That was anti climax of the decade, equal to the time Lord Voldemort disappeared in a puff of smoke.
It could have been the length of a normal episode & lost nothing but black scenes with floaty bits in.
It was way too dark, I suppose thats how they keep production costs down. Hard to actually say what happened without spoilers but there were bits of it my TV couldn't cope with and its a 2018 model 55inch Samsung
I think it was a signal issue, I watched it last night after downloading it and a lot of the darker scenes were way more clearer and looked way less pixelated than when I watched it live.
I watched it yesterday evening recorded on Sky+ from the morning and it was ridiculously dark, with scene after scene of just dialogue over indiscernible flickering lights to the point where it ruined it for me, but I stuck with if after watching the last 7 bloody series. I happened to finish watching the recording at about a minute past nine, flicked it on to watch live and the difference was immediately noticeable. I started recording it again, but don’t know whether i’ll get around to rewatching it or not now I know what happens.
I had no problems at all with the darkness of it. The TV isn't even that new as I'm actually about to replace it. From what I understand it was supposed to be dark, frantic and confusing, which it was but IMHO it lost a bit of the madness as there was just too much of it. For instance the Crypt should have been really scary but by then I was was a but "immune".... I've seen a few articles along the lines of what you said Bob and I kind of agree. But most of me thinks actually the narrative may go somewhere else completely, as it is after all GoT. We'll see come the end.....when the Imp is ruling the world.
Well it will. But we’ve had so much of “titles don’t matter” “crowns don’t matter” “all that matters is winter is coming”. Then **** and it’s all over. So many symbolic things in that episode too Spoiler johns wolf randomly appearing, having **** all to do with John, running off and presumably getting killed. Never seen again not even as a wight. Beric gets killed and brought back god knows how many times for some divine purpose, getting hacked to death 2 v 1 whilst the hound holds off an entire corridor full of white walkers. Anyone could have fulfilled Beric’s purpose. Very underwhelming. Bran and John, the two characters that have entirely been geared towards this storyline, spent the entire episode doing the root sum of absolutely **** all. We didn’t even know what Bran was up to half the time, just flew off in a flock of crows and that was the end of that. The night king went down far too fast and easy. Ok there’s going to be a rumble with the Lannister’s but been there, done that, and it’s always been more of a side issue compared to the walkers. I think the night king will have to return, no way it can all be over and done with like that.
I don't think I can quote you without it showing but... Spoiler: Spoiler Agree the Bran think was ****. I thought he would bring an army or wolves....or at least squirrels... or something to hold them off while everyone retreated but he did **** all. Less than John even.
I think this Episode was pitched perfectly - Jon Snow has been the hero (Hardhome, BOTB etc) every season since he got to the wall in season 1; it was great to see him play second fiddle to his sister. The timing was perfect, everyone was ****ed, it had to be done then, or the game's over. Best episode, ever, nothing comes close.
Spoiler: More spoilery goodness They didn't spin a wheel and it ended up on Arya by chance. They had a set of characters to choose from, those who could believably do the deed. And they chose. They knew they'd never be able to satisfy everone because everyone wanted something different. I think the NK's end was brilliant. Arya is a character who can pull that off. It subverts the audience's expectation about either Jon or Dany being destined to kill the NK. Subverting expectations and delivering a believeable alternative has been the show's mojo since the start. The episode highlighted beautifully how useless all of the brave, skilled, honorable characters were faced with an overwhelming mass of enemies. They were never going to defeat 100,000 undead soldiers head on on the battlefield. The NK knew about Jon and Dany and her dragons. He planned accordingly and rendered his two biggest threats useless. He wasn't goaded into a fantasy cliché one-on-one duel with Jon like most fantasy stories would have delivered. But he didn't know about Arya, who might be the all around most capable fighter on the show, thanks to her agility, ruthlessness, willingness to fight dirty and her ingenuity. She's not above poisoning her enemies like the Freys, goading them into a vulnerable positon like Meryn Trent. Luring them into a trap like the waif. She's the most versatile killer on the show. She didn't just jump the NK. He's so over powered, there was no other way of killing him. Jon is a good fighter, but he's human. The NK speared a dragon in flight with one throw. People say they want to see a realistic story – and then they want the NK to be defeated in single combat by Jon or destroyed by dragonfire. That was never going to happen. The more I think about Arya doing it, the more I like the decision. I will say that a lot of characters made it out alive. Realistically there should have been more casualties. But we're near the end. Whenever the show has killed off major characters, others have taken on a more major role or new ones appeared. There's no time for that. The cast that's left consists of characters that we love and care about. With the finale in sight, wouldn't it have felt frustrating to have them die off en masse just before the finale? Who would be left to root for apart from the main protagonists and antagonist? I understand that it's not exactly realistic, but **** it. I'll gladly take another four hours of screentime with Tormund, Jaime, Brienne, Pod and the Hound.
Spoiler Ghost survived. He's in the preview for the next episode. I do think he should've appeared later in the episode though since he did survive. Beric was brought back to save Arya from those wights, it makes sense if the divine purpose was to save the person who kills the NK. He was never going to be the one who killed the NK, it seemed inevitable his purpose was to sacrifice himself. Jon did **** all because the NK made sure Dany and Jon were out of the way. Bran was watching the battle using his ravens. He knows what is going to happen anyways, so whay would he do anything? NK went down exactly like a White Walker does, it makes sense. Fighting Cersei was never ever a side issue. It was always the main plot. Game of Thrones has always been a human issue, it makes sense for it to end that way. In the books it is the same, the white walkers haven't even appeared yet in those.
The best episode yet is still the one where they’re surrounded by wights and the night king kills the dragon.
