There is actually something riding on th is game Wednesday can still technically get to the play offs with two games to play, four points behind with two to play although if either Brizzle or Direby win on Saturday they play each other this will probably mean this game is an end of season affair.
Owls have improved since they appointed many with multi directional nose Steve Bruce, have been hindered like us with a staggering amount of injuries although the selection proceedure of the previous manager might also have hindered them as well.
Overall though they have had a decent season but will be casting envious eyes towards the other side of the City as the Blunts are almost certainly to be promoted on Saturday.
Games between the two sides have been competitive over the last few seasons, plenty of red cards which brings me onto the one man suspension machine commonly known as Ben Pearson, he available to play after his latest ban, he's on 14 yellows one more would mean yet another ban and he was sent off rather unluckily at Hillsborough earlier in the season and also has history with one Fernando Forestieri, add into this mix Trevor Kettle as fourth official anything could happen on Saturday.
Givn the slightly iffy forcast I may be there or possibly running after a little red ball on Mossom Lane in Blackpool, will be a match report of sorts on Saturday.

It is a case of one in, one out for manager Alex Neil ahead of his side’s final home game of the season, as they take on Steve Bruce’s Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale.

Ben Pearson is free of suspension, however, fellow defensive midfielder Ryan Ledson must sit of the first of four games, that will carry on into next season, following his second red card of the season against Wigan Athletic next Monday.

Goalkeeper Connor Ripley returned to the bench for the clash with the Latics at the DW Stadium, but the manager is still without an octet of senior players for the clash with the Owls.

Captain Tom Clarke, Alan Browne, Josh Harrop, Andrew Hughes, Brandon Barker, Tom Barkhuizen and Brad Potts, plus the suspended Ledson are all unavailable for selection.

Adam O’Reilly has been on the bench for the last two games and with no let up in the injury problems, he could again keep his spot amongst the squad.

Former North End loanee Adam Reach missed Wednesday’s impressive Easter Monday win over Bristol City at Hillsborough with a mixture of knee and Achilles injuries and he is a doubt again for the weekend.

One player definitely out is Sam Hutchinson, whose hamstring problem will rule him out for the rest of the season, whilst Cameron Dawson could continue in goal with Keiren Westwood still a doubt with the knee injury that forced him off early against title-favourites Norwich City last week.

Rolando Arrons should be fit to play a part after a week of training with the Owls squad, the loanee’s pace will be a positive addition to the options for Bruce, who takes charge of his first game of the season at Deepdale, having been the manager at Villa for our thrilling 3-3 draw back in October at Villa Park.

For the third time this season, Jeremy Simpson will take charge of the Lilywhites at Deepdale, as we face Steve Bruce’s Sheffield Wednesday.

The Carnforth referee last took charge of us for the 1-1 draw with Bristol City at the beginning of March, having also officiated the October clash at home to Rotherham United, prior to which he had not refereed the Lilywhites since January 2018, when he was the match official for the draw at Millwall, his second North End game of 2017/18; his first the 1-0 home win over Queens Park Rangers in December 2017.

This will also be Jeremy’s third Owls game of the season, having refereed their 2-1 victory against Ipswich Town at Hillsborough and their 2-1 home defeat against Derby County back in November 2018.

In 2016/17, the select group two match official took the role for our Boxing Day clash with Leeds United and the Lilywhites’ Roses victory over Huddersfield Town in October, as well as acting as fourth official at two home games.

He also was in charge when North End took on Stoke City at PR1 in pre-season that year, and is an experienced official, with plenty of Championship action under his belt.

This weekend he will be assisted by Daniel Leach and Billy Smallwood, whilst Trevor Kettle will be the fourth official.

Goals from Jayden Stockley, an own goal from Tom Lees and another from Alan Browne saw the Lilywhites share the points in a six-goal thriller against Sheffield Wednesday.

Steve Bruce's Owls came from 3-1 down to take a point, with Barry Bannan, Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu scoring the Owls in the final home game of the 2018/19 season at Deepdale.

It was a highly-entertaining clash that had everythings; some fantastic football, some great goals scored, a red card and everything you could think of; making it easy to forget the cold, damp weather!

The visitors, who were still mathematically in with a chance of the Play-Offs before kick-off, had the first chance, Bannan forcing a save from Connor Ripley, handed his North End debut by manager Alex Neil.

But this was a rare effort in the opening half an hour for the South Yorkshire outfit and the Lilywhites were soon in front.

The opener came just nine minutes in; a brilliantly worked free kick direct from the training ground. Paul Gallagher - in the middle of the Wednesday half - found Callum Robinson out on the left, who checked inside and crossed, flicked on by Browne and powerfully headed home by Stockley, his first goal at Deepdale and his 20th of the season for both PNE and former club Exeter City.

On 20 minutes a clever quick throw in from Darnell Fisher found Robinson who went into the box, fired through a low drive which was spilled by visiting stopper Cameron Dawson, but on loan Chelsea man Michael Hector cleared before Stockley could pounce for his second of the day.

Just after the half hour mark Steven Fletcher got into the box and got a shot away, Ripley making a great save with his legs and Fisher completing the clearance in a rare foray forward by Bruce's men.

But with nine minutes to go in the first half it was 2-0. A ball from the left by Fisher eventually found Joe Rafferty on the right, he drove into the box and drilled a cross in that came off Hector’s heel and then looped up and off Owls skipper Lees’ head into the back of the net with Dawson unable to do anything about the own goal.

With three minutes to go before the interval more superb forward play as Browne won the ball in his own half to send Robinson down the left, he passed inside for Sean Maguire, who, on the stretch, dragged his shot just wide of the left-hand upright to mean it was 2-0 at the break.

The second half started with PNE still on the attack; some superb slick passing with a clever one-two between Robinson and Gallagher, the latter whipping a shot that took a deflection wide of the right-hand post.

But on 49 minutes the arrears were reduced as Bannan shot from 15 yards into top left-hand corner. Hector had put over a deep cross from the left fed back by Steven Fletcher and Bannan fired home, Ripley with no chance, the effort arrowed into the corner, the only spot through a crowd of players it could have gone.

However, the lead was back to two just after the hour mark when a long ball to Stockley was superbly headed on for Maguire, who, in turn, laid the ball across that Robinson dummied for Browne to take on into the box and fire a left-footed shot into the top right-hand corner from 15 yards out for his 12th goal of the season.

But two goals in two minutes got Wednesday back on level terms. Firstly on 76 minutes a cross from substitute Atdhe Nuhiu on the right was met by Fernando Forestieri with a header into the bottom left hand corner.

And then it was Nuhiu who went from provider to goalscorer, heading home Bannan’s cross from the left, although he was all over Ben Davies and was perhaps lucky not to have a foul awareded against him.

With nine minutes to go Steve Bruce’s side were reduced to ten men with a straight red for Dominic Iorfa after a dangerous two-footed lunge with no control on Fisher – referee Jeremy Simpson given no choice to send off the right back for what could have caused injury, had the PNE No.2 not managed to see the former Wolves man coming.

It became a fraught and frantic closing minutes with Paul Huntington added into the attacking options along with Lukas Nmecha and Stockley in the dying embers of the game. And it was Hunts who went closest with two opportunities; the first from a Fisher cross hitting him andgoing just over and the second in the last of six added minutes seeing him head a Gallagher ball towards the top left hand corner, only for Hector to just deflect the ball over the bar and the game finished 3-3.

PNE line-up: Ripley, Rafferty (Huntington, 90), Fisher, Gallagher (c), Storey, Davies, Maguire, Johnson, Stockley, Browne (Nmecha, 74), Robinson (Ginnelly, 87). Subs not used: Rudd, Earl, Moult, Baxter.

Sheffield Wednesday line-up: Dawson, Palmer, Onomah (Nuhiu, 68), Pelupessy, Fletcher (João, 76), Bannan, Lees (c), Matias, Iorfa, Hector, Forestieri (Lee, 84). Subs not used: Wildsmith, Fox, Hooper, Boyd.

Same here in Norfolk. More like January. Mercifully, some rain though for a dry county. All in all, the result against Wednesday typifies the rest of the season: a curate's egg. A good streak then a collapse. A Sunday Times commentator, Ron Liddle, writes that Bolton should use PNEFC as a template for survival. hopefully, next season's home games will be more productive.

The model of searching for young, developing and hoping to keep hold or sell on for bigger money demands very good scouting and coaching staff. Such a supportive framework is not cheap and is a long term strategy and few clubs seem not to want to take such a gamble. One of the causes of short term thinking by clubs is the easy money from television. Sky, Virgin, BT may pay huge amounts of money for clubs to buy in 'talent' at over-inflated prices, but think of the money they reap from subscribers. Just a thought, total unenforcible, why not set a limit of wages for players at no more than x10 the average wage per year. Bonuses could be also be limited. The average wage is about 25k, so the footballers' wage would be set at 250k. Exit professional footballers to foreign fields! But something along those lines. Say x10 the wage of a CEO?
