Exclusive: Bristol City set for busy summer of transfer trading whichever league they're in
Robins looking to bring in seven new player.

Bristol City have plans in place to reshuffle their playing squad in the summer - whether they get promotion or not.

Bristol Live understands that the Robins are aiming to be very busy in the summer window no matter how this season pans out.

We have been told that CEO Mark Ashton and Lee Johnson are looking to bring in some seven players after the season ends as the Robins continue to develop and strive to further improve their squad.

Owner Steve Lansdown has previously explained that the Robins will try to bring in three new recruits in the summer, but the Robins wish to reinforce in seven different positions if possible in the next window, though the success will depend on those targets being available and affordable.

Bristol City tried to bring in a striker at the end of the January transfer window to supplement the squad but were unable to make any headway on their intended targets, with Ashton confirming in the digital fans' forum that the clubs they were talking to would not sell.

According to our sources, Britt Assombalonga and Scott Hogan - who the Robins were interested in in January will be targeted again in the summer window, and depending on their club's circumstances there may be a better chance of securing their signatures.

Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah is another player that City have their eye on and the England U21 forward with two goals in four matches at that level will be targeted in the summer window for a loan at Ashton Gate if the 19-year-old cannot get first team starts at the Emirates Stadium.

The club wishes to recruit a new goalkeeper and Joe Lumley of QPR is one shot-stopper who has been considered.

    Hull City (A)

A move for Zack Steffan, who has now signed for Manchester City will be ascertained if possible, with both clubs maintaining good relations through Lee Johnson, Brian Marwood and Mark Ashton.

Frank Fielding is out of contract in the summer and is unlikely to be offered a new deal. Blackburn Rovers are keeping an eye on their former player and other clubs in the north west still - as they did last summer.

The Robins wish to sign Jay Dasilva on a permanent deal - with a pre-agreed clause -but the final decision on that will come down to the player at the end of the season.

They would also like to keep Tomas Kalas but that will depend on which league they play in and who else is interested.

Lee Johnson aspires to playing Lloyd Kelly at centre-back within the next 18 months, according to our sources, and if Kalas does not return then that plan may be fast forwarded, with Zak Vyner to return to the club having completed a successful season on loan at Rotherham United.

The Robins are also aiming to recruit a midfielder and we understand that recent reports linking them with Motherwell midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin are true.

The club are tracking the 25-year-old former Boavista man, but there is competition from other Championship clubs.

As there is for Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie, who is also interesting Celtic and Rangers but is another player of interest to City.

The team from BS3 will also look to bring in several young players as they do every summer transfer window, and one such player they are currently looking at is Owura Edwards, the brother of midfielder Opi Edwards, who is on loan at Torquay United currently.

Like his brother, Owura is an attacking midfielder and the Newport County scholar is impressing on trial currently. He may well be retained.

Bristol City are in a good place to repel any bids for any of their best players, with the exception of Callum O'Dowda who only has a year to go on his current deal and could well be sold in the summer.

The club will look to offload a forward player, however, to make room for a new recruit, while the Robins are also in a good finincial position to spend in the summer, with the fees from last summer's sales coming into affect regarding compliance with financial fair-play.

Indeed, City may be one of few teams able to spend in the Championship if they are not promoted this summer.

Speaking last season, Mark Ashton explained how the club has two plans for the summer market - depending on promotion or not.

"We'd be prepared as we possibly can be. We have a set process of identifying talent and that doesn't change," he said in an interview on the club website.

"The Championship plan is very detailed. For another division it would be very difficult to execute because the timing is tight," he added.

    Where City aim to recruit

      • New striker
      • New goalkeeper
      • Left-back [Jay Dasilva]
      • Centre-back [Kalas]
      • Central holding midfielder
      • Attacking midfielder [Palmer]
      • Several young players with a view to developing too senior level

Was told last summer that the 19/20 season is the year we were apparently "going for it" regarding transfers, I assume the board didn't quite expect we'd be in such a strong position with 6 games to go. Fully expecting us to be splashing out near on 20 million in transfers so I expect Kelly and O'Dowda could be off to balance the books a bit.

If we look to play the high pressing game, like we did for the first 20 mins v West Brom, then we need a squad of players that works with it....Being able to bring on subs for when some players get tired...The second half worried me as we took our foot off the pedal...Have to say, some of our touch football on occasions is breath taking!!

this is totally at odds to what we have been led to believe will happen.... at transfer windows!
we have all wondered what is going on … then been told the club reveal advertise the players they want as causes price hikes and bidding wars ..
I am afraid over a period of time THE Evil Post gets more wrong than right and their speculation [ rumour mongering ] is just as bad...

as fans we pretty much know that there are at least 4 positions that need additional cover … GK .. CD …. MF … AND UP FRONT.. also the club has stated numerous times DaSilva and Tomas are hopefully longer term ...

Take Webster away and none of them are as good as Kalas, not even close. If we want to progress then we need to be more ambitious, Kalas and Da Silva are must buys for me, they are proven, we know what we're getting.

I would suggest that Kelly is as good if not better on the ball than Kalas. If Mr Johnson's intent is to progress building from the back he has a asset in the building now. City's passing style can be progressed minus Kalas. It can advanced tactically via another keeper and a right back if this is the approach Mr Johnson wants to pursue.

Off at a tangent there is a rule change next season to goal kicks that will favour teams who play out. It will favour technical players. It may be worth investing money on the basis of the hundreds of restarts this will affect a season for some not all teams.
