I'm considerably older than most ( ahem...all the golfers on here ) and the tiredness aspect of peak performance is valid amongst amateur golfers. The best way to counteract tiredness is to practise when you're extremely tired, the brain then gets used to performing when fatigued. When you experience physical tiredness it's down to mental tiredness, physically you've probably got a least 40% left in the tank. When on the course the mistake most amateur golfers make is concentrating too much on their game in between shots, you're not actually playing golf in between shots so it just uses valuable mental energy thinking about it. If you're on the course for 4 hours you're actually only playing golf for about 40 minutes. If anyone else wants good advice from a very experienced golf coach, you can go and bollocks because after 43 years I got sick of it and retired.....
Played 9 holes Fri and Sun (the same 9) and shot 44 and 43 respectively (my best thus far is 42), par for the 9 holes is 35 (front 3 and the last 6 on the back 9). I can see where I'm giving shots away I just can't seem to do anything to put it right at the moment other than just keep practising hoping it will eventually come together. Some lessons will definately help. Off the tee i'm inconsistent, when it's going well my putting lets me down, when it's bad my 2nd shots normally get me out of a spot more times than not thankfully but again the putting could be better. Gonna do some reading up and research on what difference it makes where your feet are in relation to the ball when teeing off. Never quite sure whether to have the ball in the middle of my stance or have my left foot closer to the ball than the right or vice versa (i'm right handed by the way) and what difference it all makes. Will have to head to the driving range to practice a few things on it as the golf course isn't the place to do that.....you'd be walking all over the place retrieving balls. Then you've got the issue of range balls being completely ****ing ****e in my opinion, they always seem softer to me and they're heavily used obviously and completely different to the balls you buy and play with so how much can you actually gauge/learn from practising with them? Personally I prefer being out on the course now and trying to better my score from the last time or my best score on each hole. Might ask the pro at the club to have a round with me for one of my rounds i need to put a card in for and see if he can give me some pointers Anyone else who knows about this stuff on here is more than welcome to have a round with me (i'll cover the green fee obviously) and give me some tips . Was hoping to get out after work today but the outlaws are coming back from holiday today so the missus has decided to cook for them coming back so that's probably gonna scupper that so will probably have to be tomorrow FFS !
Best score I have ever had was 83 - 38 on front 9, 45 on back. I can actually feel myself get nervous when I realise I am on for a good score and then get tentative. Must get out again - all this golf talk is getting me excited.
Re position of ball, starting with your wedge, place the ball midway between your feet and for every club down move the ball half an inch to the left. So hitting a six iron will be two inches left of centre. This should give you better contact and more spin on the green. Regarding lessons, I've had four with another two to follow. I would recommend booking a course of six thirty minute lessons, the pro will give you good pointers on the basics of the game which you can put to good use. You can pick up lots more good tips from the players you meet on the course or the clubhouse. Ask people for tips, don't be shy, there are some great lads out there who will help. I hurt my shoulder during the winter so instead of hitting drives and irons, I went out on the course and practised my putting. Where I've improved is reducing the amount of three putts, I'm confident that if I'm 20-25 feet from the hole I will get down in two.
I watched ten minutes of the final round of the 1980 Masters on Sky last night. Ballesteros almost blew a ten stroke lead on the second half. His challenger, an Aussie called Newton, was seen smoking on the green. Very old school A bit like the Spanish player with the cigars
I ****ing hate that arrogant prick, he's a monumental **** by all accounts. Saw a clip of him having a right pop at someone's caddie on the tee box once for nee reason, can't remember who he was playing but he wasn't ****ing standing for it and stepped in and put him back in his box.
Jack Newton was a great player and a real character. Unfortunately in 1983 he walked into the propellor of a light aircraft when pissed and lost an arm and an eye as well as huge internal injuries. He was second behind Tom Watson in the 1975 Open at Carnoustie. If memory serves me well he got down to 11 or 12 handicap playing one handed only a couple of years after his accident.
Your tips worked a treat mate cheers, had the golf channel on all afternoon which just made me wanna get out and practice. Off the tee with the big stick was pretty much bang on every time, most GIRs so far as well, missed a couple of easy putts which would have shaved 2-3 shots off but that’ll come and my putting was pretty good compared to last few rounds. +5 (40) on par 35 which I’m well happy with! Absolutely glorious out there as well. Got some new golf shoes at the weekend which have made such a difference as well...feet are no longer sore after playing, think my old shoes which I bought in oz about 5 years ago were well past their best . Dying to go out again now and make sure it wasn’t a fluke Think I’ll be ready to take you on soon at this rate Dorts loser pays for the refreshments at the 19th of course
ha ha nice one mate,. I will defo give you a game soon. What would be good for you now is to play often but against someone who has a slightly less handicap...this will make you want to compete without being hammered but it will bring your score down further and you will again pick up some priceless tips.
Indeed, i've got a couple of mates who are members at Westerhope and Longhirst who play way more than me so should be good to aim for in terms of giving them a run for their money. Got the masters on in the background in the office...as ever the course looks immense. Apparently Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus both hit their ceremonial tee-shots around 325 yds...must be a bit of a tail wind down the fairway I reckon. I've got me bets on so nearly time to kick back and watch the action unfold
Ha, Dorty's saying he'll knack you if he plays against you. Cocky b*****d. I wouldn't put up with that if I were you.
He may well win at his place but he'll then have to come to my place and win.....and I would love it, LOVE IT if I beat him there. Unlikely but local knowledge has to be worth a few shots you'd think
Tiger's off in 20 mins...why the **** is there no live coverage ANYWHERE until 7pm tonight? I have access to virtually every sports channel in England, USA/Canada as well as France and Australia etc...NOTHING !!! So frustrating!
Managed a full round this morning, went round in 88 which is my best round ever . Driving was a bit iffy again but everything else was pretty spot on save for a couple of bad holes. I can feel things coming together quite nicely now like!
Don’t know about anyone else but this thread just has a nativity feel about it. It’s like watching and reading about the birth of Tiger Woods.
