Cardiff need to pick up 6 points to overtake us. Every time we pick up even a point they need one more. So in the next 6 games, Cardiff could win 2 and us not pick up a point again and we are down. Or let's say hypothetically we win one, Cardiff need to win 3 games out of 6. Say we win one and draw one. Cardiff need 10 points (GD)...3 wins and a draw. Doable, but by doing that they beat Burnley and Brighton possibly so they are back into play. All theory, but I prefer the odds on us. Remember, you never meet a poor bookie. Or it could just be that I am a reasonably positive person in life and don't always expect the worst. Expect the worst and the universe will deliver. Mathematically possible for Cardiff, but they would have to win 3/6 of their remaining games if we win only 1/6....even the most pessimistic must see that as unlikely. Even if we drop briefly into the relegation zone if they beat Burnley and Brighton (possible) and we get nothing from Wolves and Newcastle (also possible), they still have to play Liverpool and United.
Cardiff remaining fixtures are...... Burnley (a) Brighton (a) Liverpool (h) Fulham(a) Palace(h) Utd(a) Maybe 2 points for me, draws with Fulham and Palace.
I can see them getting 5 points. Win with Palace and two draws somewhere. We can go on holiday now if that is the case
It could cost them badly next season. Firstly, they're becoming less and less attractive to potential new summer signings. Secondly, they're at risk of taking this form and downward momentum into next season. Not that it's really their fault, though. Once they reached safety - which they pretty much did surprisingly early, given their great start to the season - they've had nothing to play for. But if their manager was anyone other than Eddie...
I still think Newcastle are in deep doodoo. If they lose to Palace and then away at Leicester, our game with them is a genuine six-pointer. If we can get 4 points from Wolves and Newcastle we’ll be pretty much there, and still have Bournemouth and Huddersfield at home to come.
Also we just lost to the top team. We played very well. Ralph will keep our level going until the end long the season. Also we have Huddersfield.
As an absolute minimum, Cardiff will need a further extra 8 points to finish above Newcastle. And that's assuming Newcastle lose every remaining game. Newcastle are certainly in great danger of finishing 17th. But 18th? I think we're fine, and we're two points behind them with a weaker GD.
