Tomorrow at Rosehill in Sydney, a small, be select field of 3year old colts will tangle in the prestigious $1,000,000 Golden Rose 1400m. Although the numbers taking part are thin on the ground, the quality of the field is full of class. Not only will the latest “boom” horse Smart Missile take part, he’ll have to take on the Darley owned, multi G1 winner, Helmet and couple of upstarts with huge reputations, Manawanui and Aeronautical. Throw in Foxwedge and Flight Of Pegasus, and bang, we have a dog fight of the highest order. 1. 1-3. HELMET. (4) McEvoy. 56.5kg. 5-2. P. Snowden. Exceed and Excel – Accessories. (Singspiel.) IRE. Third first up behind Smart Missile in the G3 Run To The Rose 1200m, where he was still second last at the 400m in a field of 7. Slightly hampered, but flew home to be beaten a length and a quarter when third. Winner of two G1 races, the Sires Produce 1400m and Champagne Stakes 1600m. A head banger colt who doesn’t like the starting stalls and races erratically. Will be blinkered for the first time here. Has a load of ability but will need to put it all together to get away with this. 6:4-0-2. 2. 1-1. SMART MISSILE. (5) G. Boss. 56.5kg. 1-1. A. Cummings. Fastnet Rock – Comical Smile. (Comic Strip) USA. Unbeaten Colt who pulled off an astounding win in the G3 Run To The Rose 1200. Last of 7 at the 400m but came with wet sail to swamp leaders on the line. Won the Breeder’s Plate 1000m and the G2 Todman 1200m before that. Has always conceded a heap of ground in running and will probably do so again here. Boss is of the opinion that the horse is the best 3 yo he’s ever ridden, and he’s been on a heap. 3:111. 3. -12. FOXWEDGE. (1) J. McDonald. (a) 56.5kg. 8-1. J. O’Shea. Fastnet Rock – Forest Native. (Forest Wildcat.) USA. Ran nice race when on pace in the G3 Run To The Rose 1200m. Grabbed tearaway leader at 200m but had no answer to the fast finishing Smart Missile. Before that, won G3 San Domenico 1100m when 3rd in running. Will be in front of most of the hot chances for most of the race, but over this trip he might struggle to hold them out. 5:2-1-1. 4. 1-1. MANAWANUI. (3) G. Schofield. 56.5kg. 6-1. R. Leemon. Oratorio IRE – Lady Remlap. (Filante.) NZ. Had a storming win in the G3 Up And Coming 1300m, in heavy conditions. Bolted in. Came from 5th at the 800m to be 3rd into straight, then exploded. Won by 4.5L. Another who’s rider is highly impressed. Schofield is on record as saying the colt is the best horse he’s thrown a leg over. Connections paid a $50,000 late entry fee to compete. He has a big shout. 4:3-0-1. 5. 511. AERONAUTICAL. (6) N. Berry. 56.5kg. 10-1. L. Cohen. Encosta de Lago – Moon Fever. (Fusaichi Pegasus.) USA. Slashing win last time in the Listed Rosebud 1200m when he came fron last of 9 on the corner. He won easing down by 3.5L Start before in a 2yo handicap 1200m, he did the same thing, coming from the rear with a whirlwind finish. His young jockey loves the horse and thinks him something really special. He worked the house down on Tuesday coming home the last 400m in 22.26. Another youngster who could be anything. 4:2-0-0. 6. 4-5. FLIGHT OF PEGASUS. (2) C. Munce. 56.5kg. 100-1. S. Aspery. Fusaichi Pegasus – Flight Of Dreams. (Flying Spur.) Not good enough in the Run To The Rose 1200m. 5th to the corner but only held ground, going down by 5.6L to Smart Missile and Foxwedge. 4th of 15 before that in the G3 Baillieu 1400m. Made some ground late, beaten only 2L on the line. But this race seems a bit too strong for him. 4:1-0-1.
Morning Cyc .i thought you may not have time for horses, with all the rugby going on down there. Not much chance of Canada getting through in pool A.They are still "learning" the game but a bunch of big, fit, guys that may make some matches closer than what looks on paper. Back to racing,Manawanui at 6/1 looks good from what you wrote. I assume big pond will be showing the race. Racing yesterday was the s....ts, your picks came in 2nd and 3rd, the jockey on the horse that came 3rd was a complete joker talk about giving up on a ride. Good on yer for doing the international thread, I will write something over the weekend from Woodbine, or elsewhere
No worries mate, yes Bigpond will cover the race. None of the Rugby Pools are easy for the "fringe" teams. But I'm really looking forward to as many matches as I can cram in. The All Blacks take on their old foes Tonga tonight. The ABs should win, but the other Islander Nations really step up in these tournaments.
I'm not a big follower of rugby but it looks as if NZ,ENG,AUS and SA will win their respective pools and everyone else playing for 2nd spot,Pools D and C look tricky to find who comes second. It will be a national holiday for you guys if AUS and NZ meet in the final.Or might i call it a fosters day
That would be one hell of a game. A real grudge match. If the ABs make the final, which will be at home, they should win.
Final result. 4 Manawanui. 2 Smart Missile. 1 Helmet. (on protest.) Islander: Good job picking the winner at a nice price mate. 13-2 fixed odds.
close race that missile horse was coming on strong luckily the line came as it did a few more yards and it would have been a diferent result
