Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Whiting. One of the pillars of the sport and a down right good bloke by all accounts. Deepest condolences to his family. This will change the dynamic of the weekend, that's for sure. Sad news indeed.
RIP Charlie. This is a sad time for the people in F1 and a momentous time for the sport of F1. Who will succeed him? Big decisions ahead. But right now, there's really only one thought - deepest sympathies to his family & friends.
Very sad news for everyone in the motorsport world. He takes so much experience and knowledge with him about how to handle the issues that he faced on a daily basis with the F1 circus. I would have loved to have read his memoirs if he had ever got round to writing them when he retired and he could have really spilt the beans on some of the stuff that went on behind the scenes. RIP
Would love to hear a compilation of some of the best radio messages between driver - team - Charlie and back again. As an aside, I can see Liberty eventually using this as a marketing opportunity in the future. How long before there are now 'celebrity' starters to press the button sequences to get a race going? They have celebrity flag wavers at the end, so this now seems the next thing? I don't think Charlie would ever have entertained that prospect. Is Herbie Blash still around? He is the last of the 3 that took F1 away from its more amateur roots in the late 80's and into the sport that F1 has now become. Would he take over from Charlie?
