And the Villa game, where he scored and then nearly started a punch up at the end! He was pure drama!
Interesting you think that mate. Dier’s much better defensively, class DM when he’s fully fit, protects our back four so well and he’s got a better range of passing than Winks. Winks can retain it better but in terms of cross-field pings or balls over the top, Dier’s hands down better. It’s just a shame Dier’s gash for England, think that’s why a lot of opposition fans don’t rate him and understandably so, but for Spurs he’s definitely one of our most important players.
Fair enough! Game of opinions I guess - and I will bow to someone that watches week in, week out. I do like Dier, but for me he’s borderline not good enough for spurs. Every time I’ve seen him his passing has been erratic. If he didn’t have Toby and vertonghen behind him, he wouldn’t look as good. Winks for me however has great potential. I like that he’s happy to receive the ball in tight spaces, play on the half turn and make things happen. He’s one of those players that makes the game look easy
Dier will need watching at corners. I expect Prowsey or Valery will be marking him, whilst our main CBs will be marking that 6 yard line, just in case it tries to nudge the ball home. I hate zonal marking. Especially as it gives dangerous players the chance to run and launch themselves at the ball, whilst ours are jumping from a standing start.
I think we’ve abandoned zonal marking? It’s just that our CBs are a bit slow, they are actually meant to be following their man at set plays.
In my eyes, I’d probably say only Eriksen, Kane, Son, Alli and Vertonghen are more important than Dier is to our team. With the exception of Vertonghen, many of us have even said we’d rather he be captain than Lloris. Very under appreciated player although he doesn’t help himself because he’s often been **** for England. Winks does a job, will give a 6/10 performance pretty much every week but that won’t help us reach the next level. Doesn’t offer enough either offensively or defensively, just helps keep possession which is only really ideal if we’ve got a slender lead.
I have to say my opinion is absolutely based on his England appearances as I only see highlights from Spurs games ... and I always groan when he starts or comes on. He needs pace around him and maybe he gets more of that for Spurs Tomorrow will tell
Tomorrow will tell -------------------- Red card and a OG and I'm recommending you for next match day thread!
A lot of our players seemed to struggle away from the bosom of Pochettino, whether that be with England or subsequent moves to pastures new. Perhaps he needs that guidance or game plan to bring the best from him? I had hoped he would be that defensive midfield missing piece for England, but it’s not quite happened and I’m now expecting Declan Rice to take that mantel.
Perhaps if he spent less time mugging off young american academy players for hard earned cash, and more time practicing he'd achieve more in the game.
Yeah that’s very much likely the case with Dier. Rice is definitely gonna be knocking on that door sooner or later. Was hoping we’d nick him from West Ham in the summer before he signed his new deal, partly because we could do with reinforcement at DM seeing as Wanyama is finished and partly because it’d **** West Ham right off.
