I was a fan of the idea of VAR, especially when it was originally meant to be for just 'clear and obvious mistakes'. Now I'm starting to think it should be limited to offside calls only. They are already starting to look for reasons not to give goals, which is backwards.
This ain't nothing yet, plenty of scope for me to take tedious up another notch or two by next season
Yay, cant wait Seriously though, the day it works where it punishes Vardy for being a rat, and Virgil, Adam, Dejan and all of 'em for being, welll rats, and gives them all 12 season bans, I reckon you may start to like it.
VAR isn't the problem it is the refs. They need more training on how not to be incredibly thick and implement it properly. "Clear and obvious" should mean just that. People can say refs need more training and if they did then we wouldn't need VAR, but I can't imagine the FA or whoever are just like "yeah it's cool" after **** up after **** up that we have seen in recent years. They will have put in a lot of time and money into training and it hasn't been enough. Need to invest time and money into training them on VAR, with the help of ex players so they can have a clear understanding of how to use it.
Actually, isn't part of the problem that we don't understand the handball rule as fans? The rule itself seems clear, but the guidance which has been given to referees is different to what we might think. "The big challenge is the position of the arm. When the arm is totally out of the body above the shoulder it should be penalised. If the defender is making the body bigger in order to block the ball it is not fair." Now, we might say that last night there was no deliberate attempt to handle the ball, but if we look at this guidance (as quoted on a Beeb article) then I would say the call is correct. The defender leapt to block the ball. He chose to turn his back, and his arm extended the dimensions of his body, "making the body bigger". According to the guidance given to refs, that makes it a penalty. The problem here is not VAR. It is that handball is such a stupid rule it needs this kind of guidance to make it work.
Not for me. It wasn't a unnatural position of the arms. Now had the ball been two yards away & his arms raised, that would constitute a pen. That's how I see it.
That’s makes two of us, that’s how I saw it as well. Must admit, I’m really happy United went through though. I really can’t stand PSG’s diving and other antics
This argument would stack up a lot better if the refs who have already been using it a while were making a success of it. Giving **** officials technology won't suddenly mean they make better decisions.
The same argument can be used with what we currently have. Giving **** officials more training hasn't made them any better either. VAR is a logical potential solution to this if given more training. It may be **** and it maybe in a couple of years time I agree with you, but right now I don't think "it slows the game down" or "they got that decision wrong" is a good enough reason to bin it just yet when it very much is in its early stages.
The ref who made the decision lates is considered one of the leading var officials in Europe as well as generally one of the top officials in the world having gone to the world cup. What evidence have you seen that it will work and be of benefit to the game here?
Never in a million years did I think it was a penalty yesterday. But I don't blame technology for that. I blame the human being on the field who decided it was a penalty - and the human being sat behind a screen somewhere, who presumably also felt strongly it was a penalty.
Exactly. Neither of those human beings, I’m guessing, have ever tried to legally block a shot on goal at near point-blank range.
