I genuinely foresaw the change in football and thought that this could be one of my last few chances to get miserably soaked to the bone at a substandard 4th Division football match.
Speaking of Johns and dossiers, I'd have given my eye-teeth* to have seen John from Walkington's "Yes - To Hull Tigers" submission to the FA. *Well, maybe a comparable cash value.
Gregor Rioch was definitely not unmemorable, he did as much if not more for us probably than the likes of Swanny who you would think was a club legend the way he carries on!
The 90s were a dreadful decade for us from whatever angle you care to look. The lowering of gates, expectations, playing standards and managerial competence far lower than any depths previously fathomed meant that our club was reduced to the equivalent of a homeless old crone begging money to buy spice from a Jameson street doorway after having been the equivalent of a buxom perky self confident paralegal striding confidently down Silver Street on her way to Court. I never got that larky FER ARK thing. It;s like admitting you live in a ****hole and chortling about it all. Gregor: a poor player in a poor team in a poor decade.
True but you have to remember that many were cutting their teeth with the club at the time – hence the fondness
I pity any kid starting out now. Naff mscots, buffoon on the mike asking inane questions to shy kids before the game, over zealous stewarding and subdued reticent crowd. Looks like they have to bribed with food and drink too.
Truth accepted but what other version will they know? Food wise, you could be right, I dunno. Maybe it's like going to the pictures and there's a need to buy ****loads, but I've never really got the obsession that some have with food at the ground per se anyway (I've only ever bought in desperation). My own story started in 80s and I think the only food available was those horrible fish and chips biscuit things and Wagon Wheels. Oh and Bovril - if that counts.
Last night, their sub was announced as Ben Marshall. I thought of this thread, didn't we have a forgettable player of the same name.? Right back? Signed from Leicester (possibly on loan?) in the Pete Taylor era. I think he suffered a broken leg which finished him?
Dave Spence. Perenial reserve left back behind Dennis butler, don Beardsley and possibly Roger Devries. Unsure if he ever played first team.. That was enough to be a legend in Brough. Played cricket against him many a time and seemed a genuinely decent fella,
Steve Edwards, hapless young centre-back from the Mike Smith days and from the same team; goal shy Nick Deacy
Certainly lives up to the 'least memorable' title. I don't recall him at all and can't find any record of a player of that name. Did you mean Steve Richards maybe?
