There are currently no limitations on any adventurous young Briton who fancies trying their luck in Germany or France; you can just get up and go, and look for a job when you get to Berlin or Marseille. You don’t need money for that.
How many of those people (like me) even young 'uns do you think the whole freedom to study and work message had any resonance in the referendum?
On an Ides vein of Satire. I just got my weekly "leavers of Britain e-leaflet" and they are talking about their last meeting in York. Then there's a picture of a friendly smiling face. Arthur Scargill. Always thought he was a good chap
I think that referendum has slammed a door in the face of any number of young people. I wouldn't want to put a number on it, but I heard a bus full of young people discussing exactly that, on my way home from work a few evenings after the referendum.
A huge number of young people, and they are the ones who will suffer most from the lunacy of Brexit. I am ashamed of the 17.4 million people who were deceived into voting leave, and that includes you.
When I did it, I hitched across France, and took any work I could get. I left with about 30 quid in my pocket, went hungry a few times, slept in all sorts of places. I also found the locals remarkably generous and helpful.
The son of a friend of mine walked across Europe from Amsterdam to Serbia, with hardly any money. He wanted to explore the culture of hospitality among European nations, and was amazed by the generosity of everyone he met, and the interest they took in his project.
Just looked up the voting figures for under 25’s. Between 70 - 75% voted Remain. Says it all. We have betrayed the next generation with this bullshit. What a ****ing triumph!
Good man. I got to Hamburg before the Beat-Less lot from Merseyside. Got a lift from Dover to there, and got a job washing up in a cafe, before using the money to travel through Europe. Hitching was considered an OK way to travel back then. So too sleeping on benches. Do wonder if "On The Road" would get written today. Sorry, being an old fart. My kids have all backpacked and stuff and done the same sort of trips. But one of my kids then took advantage of freedom of movement to settle in France - working, Imps, not relying on Bank of Mum and Dad - and become fluent in the language and learned a lot more about life. It's all about what's in your head, but the closing of opportunities isn't going to make that leap of imagination any easier.
Ha, yeah. I had a beat up copy of On The Road in my pocket everywhere I went in the late 70's. My first experience of hitch hiking was a when me and a mate set out for the Devils Bridge mushroom festival in South Wales. This one... http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/Psilocybin-Festival.html
Sorry but I don’t get your comment that there isn’t a leave campaign. Of course there is and was. Living in the midlands It was clear from the start back in 2016 that the Remain had got it so badly wrong. Just by listening to the opinions in the office and seeing the numerous leave banners on the motorways. I travel a lot and it’s sad to say that I didn’t see my first Remain poster on a main arterial road until the day of the referendum. I blame Cameron for his arrogance and incompetence
And build the Vanguard ballistic missile subs but not actually buy any Trident missiles to put in them. Also why should the highest earners pay a higher percentage of their income? If you kept it at 40% they would still pay more tax as 40% of a higher income is still more and it might stop them trying to find ways to evade paying tax. My earnings put me in the 40% tax bracket but not by a massive margin, but it means that immediately I get a pay rise or bonus almost half goes back on taxes and NIC.
What a complete ball ache though!!! Needing to apply for a visa, paying for it and queuing in the non-EU queue
Unfortunately there was a higher percentage of the 18-24 that couldn’t be arsed to vote. If they had with same 70-75% remain vote it would have been a result to remain
You missed the main points, of course you will be able to travel to Europe with a visa. The right to live, work, retire and buy property (as I have) without "the right paperwork" (whatever that will be and at what cost) will be gone. JAB.
The overseas vote wasn't mobilised either, a second referendum would see a big change in that. Albeit there were retirees that voted leave, IE for a pay cut and loss of healthcare. ''Kin bonkers!
