Just abit of a random thought really, but has anyone ever thought of rooney as a midfielder, kind of attacking mid??

he basically ends up playing there anyway, constantly dropping deep etc

So why not play him there, allow him to start from deep, pass the ball, make the runs etc etc

He is best deployed as an out and out striker or as a second striker imo. Why play him in midfield when it isn't his favoured position and when he is doing a great job in his current role? If it isn't broken, we don't need to try fix it. Not saying he can't play in midfield, just saying I don't see him being best utilised there and don't think a move would make sense, given his current form in his preferred position.

I think everyone here has thought about Rooney playing midfield, but his best position is as a second striker. He'll drop back to pick up the ball and help start attacks, but he's most lethal when he can exploit the space between the defense and the midfield with someone like Chicharito playing on the last shoulder of the defender. Suggesting Rooney is/was a viable option, but now that our midfield is a lot more creative and energetic getting forward, it isn't necessary.

the second striker role is essentially an attacking midfield role anyway! which is what he prettty much does now with out the actual official tag of him playing in 'midfield'! I see him very similar to the role sneijder plays and he might drop deeper as the years go on! there's no dount that he is best in the position he is currently being used in though! I think England should use him as a second striker/attacking midfielder too!

People have been suggesting rooney in an advanced midfield role for about 6 months now, its not a new suggestion mate.
