Indeed. It’s actually worse than just that, the strategic decisions they make today are for 5-7 years in advance, that industry is facing big change in terms of electrification etc, and that will require heavy investment in tooling and plant infrastructure. The current uncertainty means that companies like Honda simply don’t know what our trading arrangements will be with the EU in future years. So they have to make decisions today based on pragmatism.

There was warning of this last year when the CEO of Honda Europe said that their analysis had calculated that a no deal Brexit would add £10’s of millions of cost to their production costs, both in terms of tariffs and the additional processing costs and time delays associated with having to process an additional 60,000 pieces of documentation to build the things and then ship them to the EU.

Yet still we’ll hear a queue of Brexiter blowhards trying to maintain that this is nothing to do with Brexit........they’re lying.

Rees Mogg's favourite Economist P Minford has already admitted/boasted that brexit will bring about the destruction of our agriculture and manufacturing industries but is a price worth paying. Quite what replaces them isn't clear (to me).

For me, as i said previously, the car industry is being struck by seismic change right now.

electric cars.have been a play thing. the power train for the next gen cars has.been.defined. it's electrics motors powered by whatever... batteries, petrol engine or hydrogen fuel cells.

The call is where to tool up now for all new models....and the UK is taking brexit call right at this time and cutting off eu market.. and why.. cos the Tories insist no matter what for 2 years there will be no customs union.

    Services of course.

Who needs food when you can import it from the other side of world. Who needs to make things when you.can buy it from China.... oh who needs services.... erm... you know those Chinese guys who make things.. well.. oh.. they also provide better services as well.. pension within 5 years.

The ordinary gullible twat thinks brexit will make us free. It will make us serfs

so what i've learned in 24 hours about honda:

    1. swindon plant exports 90% of its production.

    2. US and europe are apperently supported form swindon

    3. They made 160,000 honda civics last year.

    4. Honda car sales are down

    5. EU and japan have tree trade deal

    6. all EU cars will be supported from japan by honda apparently.

    7. honda plant in swindown was already operating at 50% capacity. It is unclear since when,

    8. all 3500 jobs are to go and to be announced today when workers are finally told. (someone in honda but FAR MORE LIKLEY UK GOVERNMENT needs a slap here)

Just a separate point. Last year where i used to work closed. Before we were told it was leaked. the word was the minute the government agencies were told formally (see liam fox today) it was in the press and someone got paid by papers. These scum bags with no risk to their cushy job or fat pension are that greedy they leak stories to make money. If There was a reasonable suspect (and they senior civil servants know well) I'd want them fired and pension stripped as an example

The plant has a second line which has been mothballed since the crash in 2008. The other line was running at more or less full capacity.

The Japan / EU trade deal doesn’t see car tariffs hit zero until 2027. This is a decision brought about by the uncertainty and potential massive cost increases of Brexit, as laid out by Hondas European CEO last summer.

Come on. This is massive news and there is no way this kind of news can be kept under wraps for any length of time.

Did people at Swindon or Sunderland REALLY think that their jobs could be at risk by Brexit? Any sensible person would run away from a risk even small . So they must have been taken in by the pathetic lies of the Brexiteers. How often did we have warnings painted as project fear.

One thing about the ultra Brexiteers is that most of this economic catastrophe (in the short term) will not affect them. Who owns or work in the car industry or in finance in the City? The reality is those pushing so much for a hard Brexit will not be affected themselves while millions of the people will be.

    No..

    sorry but no.

the company goes to the department max 24 hours before and formally announces intentions. The basic "manners" is to allow company then go to the workers and announce before having it all over papers.

What I am talking about is a formal requirement to inform departments of threat to jobs. These filthy scumbag civil servants then sell that the rags for profit.

anyway..... aside form that point which i feel strongly on as alluded to....

People working for any multinational who are exporting the vast majority of product should have seen the risk or at least listened a bit. If they weighed it against the perceived benefits of being "free" then thats their choice made in the full knowledge.

All one needs do is look at 3500 directly affected. = not quite a 7000 adults but say it is.. x 2 kids.. (not all again but for maths) = 14000 people.

use the 4 x jobs in supports affected = 7000x 4 = 28000 other jobs = 112k in families affects outside that plant.

so that one single decision can affect that much in terms of the knock on...

So yeah it won't take long for the figure of thsoe affected to reach millions... but hey they are "free" after 29th march.

This new party is about 3 years too late to actually do anything about #brexit

So is it just for politicians who don't want to accept any responsibility for what the system they were a willing participant in led to?

Or are they actually going to campaign in future elections on taking us back into Europe?

    no chance.

The moment they leave the parties they are into a first past the post constituency battle. All they will do is split the labour vote at best in constituency and hand it to tories next time rond.
