I'm not saying it's not effective on uneducated people who rely on being told what to think.

As for parents.... Well they had parents...so did they.... hence generations of republican or loyalists sharing the same narrow views no matter whether the world has changed around them.

Will govts, media owners or anyone else that can obtain some form of power try to exploit fear of "the other"? Obviously.

But tribalism and fear of difference, haves and have nots pre date all modern media formats or indeed all modern forms of govt. Hence the fact that no matter what country or what ideology those in power claim to hold racism, xenophobia and sectarianism have existed.

I maintain my argument though. None of those attempts are as successful in a largely educated population with free access to multiple sources of information and the ability to analysis that information.

True... and I agreed with top bit in my next post..

If left uninterrupted it's a cycle.

Again I'm not denying the likes of the media you mention or the likes of Boris Mogg, DUP and indeed Corbyn etc in their own ways or for their own reasons encite against particular groups to cement their positions.

Just saying in a liberal country the answer is educate the population not clamp down on unpleasant speech. Treating people like children rarely gets the result wanted.. . Brexit is a pretty big example.

I honestly didn’t think that the mancs had any chance of top 4 whatsoever. They were 11 points behind 4th only a few weeks ago. The bookies were giving 30 to 1 for a CL place. Now they are in 4th instead of Chelsea who still have to play. Hope the Londoners can still get that point . Two birds with a stone ;)

I guess that's the problem isn't it? The system is set up in place so that if you haven't got the wealth then you have little to no access or chance of a good education, therefore keeping the cycle in place and making the divide easier to keep in place.

You say free access to multiple sources of information but the majority of sites that people frequent like Facebook, as an example, have been flooded with fake news articles from right wing parties and companies.

There's so much to say on this subject I wouldn't know where to start.

If we are just looking at the Salah story you have to factor in the mob mentality and/or showing off in front of your mates. The person/people involved may likely be very well educated and from good families who would be outraged at this behaviour. If the culprits are ever identified I bet they will say they've never done this before and are ashamed of themselves. None of which excuses the fact that they did it but I'm just addressing the poor education comments and not this particular situation or the problem in society in general.

And China has very limited versions of what you describe. those in power attempting to control the views people are allowed to see... censorship ? As it results in exactly the same thing.... just different powerful people.... in fact it's worse as censoring starts with misinformation then forms of protest or attempts to uncover the states version of events.... and the methods to stop unpopular opinions become increasingly authoritarian.

Education is about knowing the tools at your disposal and their weaknesses.

As for resources in education... sorry but most of the people on this board don't appear to be rich, come from varied backgrounds and many had at least part of their education under various right wing govts...and yet are literate and can readily identify exactly the types of misinformation you talk about.... this myth that somehow there are places in the country where there's no access to education. It's there, there are laws to insist the kids go to school... there's a curriculum that while not perfect, not perfectly presented is still more than enough to equip children with a brain.

If they aren't going? We are back to parents. Or local culture that sees education as the tool of the elites rather than of the majority.

Slobbering rants in the Daily Mail don't stop kids going to school. And from what I can see have not succeeded in changing the curriculum in any level of education to mirror their views. In fact id say the curriculum has become increasingly progressive over the last few years.

I genuinely don't think we are disagreeing overall though.... just which issue is at most fault.... it's all a collective problem that allows the ****ers to profit from it.

I was beaten as a kid by my stepdad and his reasoning was well it was good enough for me and he also was quite racist in his comments in private.

I started senior school just as they changed the law on discipline in schools so no idea how bad it used to be.

Trouble is we have gone too far the other way in how children are nowdays and seems to be no respect for anything or anyone now days. Look at the bouncers recently in liverpool echo protecting the public and even the judge was disgusted why it went to court. Cps response was a ****ing joke and this is the system that is supposed to protect us!!

Cant smack your kids anymore for fear of getting in trouble for it. No im not talking beatings but when kids can threaten you the adult saying i will call social services well something has gone seriously wrong in society and you have loons like boris who was brought up with a silver spoon up his arse having power and influence on things.

Racism is similar in they only want to highlight the issues when it suits or why has the same level of respect not been given to salah.

Sorry but its a ****ed up world and dont see it changing sadly.

Tbh I do agree with the majority of this, I just disagree with the education bit. There is education everywhere but I doubt the quality of it in poorer areas! And I always imagine its hard if you have fallen on hard times and you see daily news of immigrants allegedly flooding the country, ruining our NHS, or getting massive benefits then it is quite easy to blame them for your struggles, its a lot easier than looking at yourself or the system as a whole, thats for sure.

Like you say, its a collective problem and I think all these small things we've mentioned play a part in it, but the only people it benefits in the end is the 1% that rule the country.

Anyway, apologies for the short reply but I've got a pub to get to for the big game later ;)

I said at the time I wouldn’t rule them out. Going forward their players are good enough to beat everyone bottom half, they just needed someone to go let them play which is what OGS has done.

That along with the fact that Chelsea and Arsenal have been really inconsistent all season then only takes a decent run to close the gap which is what has happened

This time last year Everton had sacked Koeman, sacked Unsworth, and were talking about sacking Allardyce

Now they have even fewer points than then

If he had a stake in both clubs it wouldn’t be allowed, but he’s not got a stake in Oldham he’s going there as an employee not a stakeholder and he’s only a relatively small stakeholder in Salford (10% iirc).

Did well when he arrived. Change the style from the durge of last season and I enjoyed going the game again.

It was all going well imo, until the 97th minute at Anfield.......

That shocker has derailed us, without question. We’ll now see what he’s made of as he needs to stop the slide. We’re not going down, we’re not making Europe so there’s **** all to be gained by chopping him. I want some continuity again, and I’m prepared to see this fella given the time it needs to sort us out.

That dressing room only has one leader and he’s 36 and doesn’t play - Jags. There’s some spineless, overpaid egos in there, and they need outing, that’s been the case for the last few seasons.

There’s only one aspect of his management that winds me up and that’s the zonal marking. He needs to either ditch it, or get in a coach who knows how to get it to work effectively, as whoever is currently defensively drilling that lot needs to go.
