Long way to go just to have a wander around Castro, in any case that type of night life is not my scene these days but it was the norm in Hull nearly every night back in the days I mentioned, when it mattered to me. Long way from Brid as well but there again Brid and Scarborough were often on our nights out, especially stag nights.
Disagree GLP, you need a bit of everything, a tech hub has already been established and this will compliment it, daytime workers go for lunches and after work drinks, I've lunched in Berts which looks out to The Dock and The Deep. The new town houses behind Humber Street too will bring more life to the area. I'm a massive advocate of culture but regeneration needs to have a balanced mix. Change is still happening.
Its replacing the ARCO site on Waverley Street (near Vauxhall Tavern) Waverley St is going to be used as a storage facility for the building gear for Castle Street
Agree you need a balanced mix. I just don’t think it’s an appropriate use of all that land. An office could be anywhere that benefitted the local economy in the same way you describe. There’s already the ‘World Trade Centres’ near Sammy’s point. My initial thought was it seems a shame to give over such an enormous prime location building plot to an office. Deserves something more befitting in my opinion. I may be wrong, but that is what I thought and I haven’t been convinced it’s a positive. It’s great that jobs will no doubt be created.
That's the place Gambler, I couldn't think of the name, my wife went in there on a spinsters night out and said it was the oddest place that she had been to. Not long after we both visited and let's put it this way, neither of us ever went in again.
Was owned by the Tighes. Originally the Golden Gloves. That had an open grill at one end doing steaks and a stairway with only room for one person at a time. Wouldn't be possible nowadays. Everyone you wouldn't want to tangle with in the 1960s was in the Gloves in the early hours.
Came out of there on a stretcher and straight into an ambulance one night, crashed out in the gents and everyone thought I had been stabbed. Turned out I had thrown up all the nights rum and black down the front of my white shirt. They still took me to hospital though which gave me a night in a bed which was better than sleeping on the beach like we usually did.
Yes. It also has, despite being smaller than Hull more restaurants than Hull. Of course they need them to feed all the tourists. It also has more pubs per head of population. No wonder tourists flock there with all that in addition to the sightseeing attractions.
Used to go to the Taboo in Scarborough back in the day, until one of the lads ended up in coma after being thrown down the stairs.
A lad I know gave up bouncing after ejecting a local trouble maker there. The twat then stabbed, and killed, the first person who came round the corner because he was in a bad mood at being thrown out. Despite being about 6'2 and over 20 stone he thought enough is enough. Was a big Leicester fan. Remember seeing him in East Stand in a Cup game against Leicester and offering to take on all the City fans gesticulating and mouthing off. Not one moved. I did tell him when he was having a lot off at work some years later he wouldn't have spoken to me like that 20 years ago. What makes you think that he asked. Easy, I said. I would have been 25 and you would have been about 12. And not many 12 year olds bothered me when I was 25.
Never had any trouble myself we just played pool upstairs but saw plenty of scraps between locals themselves and tourists. Used to be 2 big lads on the door who seemed to like me for some reason, something to do with me and my mates birds being "bonny".
