Over the next couple of years, I plan to run the Great North & South runs for a hospice that my granddad dies in a few years ago.

Anyway I was just wondering if any of you guys have done both/either one and just to get your views on how hard the runs are etc.

Hopefully it will lead to the London Marathon the year after.

Awesome. I've not done one that long before but I did a 10 mile one years ago and I'll just say I'm glad I already jogged regularly cause some guys were absolutely knackered after just a short while.

Yeah I've recently started playing football again and plan to go jogging twice a week, my dad is a fitness enthusiast so will probably go running with him after a while.

My sister has done the Great South Run the previous two years and is doing it again this year. If she can complete it, anyone can <laugh>

I did the London Marathon in 2008. It was one of the best things that I have ever done. The atmoshere was incredible. Even when I went up to London on the preceeding Thursday to collect my number and goodybag there was a real buzz.

I wanted to complete it in under 3hrs 45mins and was on target to do this until I had a tumble just after 17 miles and hurt my knee. It then took me 2 hours to run, walk, hop and limp the last 9 miles. Crossed the line in 4hrs 13mins and knackered my knee for over 3 months (it was worth it though)

I have applied again for this year and should find out next month if I have got a place.

If anyone is thinking about doing it I would say, definately, but make sure that you train properly for it cos 26 miles is a bloody long way.

Mate, I did the GSR 3 years ago. Portsmouth is very flat and easy running (save for a few cobbles here and there)....good crowds but I had atrocious weather so a blinkered view on things. When it's windy and raining horizontally it's quite a hard race, if you do it in sunshine I bet it's lovely!

I ran for the train recently. This led me to two conclusions:

    1) I'm very unfit
    2) There is always anther train.

    Good luck with the run.

Have done the Great North Run 4 times. I find it an odd course, cos you go from city centre to shields so basically sea level, yet it feels like you are forever going uphill!

My best time (2 years ago) was 1hr 40, previous attempts were around 1.50 to 2hrs, and the volume of runners at that pace is quite high, its very busy towards teh end and quite frustrating as its hard to keep your rhythm going round people who are suddenly walking etc!

Recommend it massively though, if you have never been a massive runner before then the sense of acheivement you get is fantastic when you finish (even if you've done further in training!)

I'm tempted to enter either the London Marathon or the Great South Run. I see myself as reasonably fit, but 26 miles fit? Not sure :(
