I would move but my wife won't. Went to Brid Town's first ever game in 1958/1959 when they reformed from Bridlington Central United. Used to go every home game and a fair few away games, a decent following those days. Got my mother to come back early from holiday in Blackpool so as not to miss a cup qualifier against Scarborough. Seeing Brid Town at Wembley was a great thing, something we fantasised about as kids. Saw 3 people at Wembley who had moved away and I hadn't seen for 25 years. Of course it then went pear shaped with an owner who changed kits, was dodgy and threatened to move to another town. Sounds familiar, eh? Had seen a few clubs on holiday and at relatives but a lad at school said some of them were going to City in the 62/63 season. Went and enjoyed it and then went as often as I could afford. The game that really got me hooked was the Everton FA Cup tie.Funny enough the lad who got me going hardly ever went again, can only recall him going to the Man U Watney Cup game and a game against Boro which was like a running battle. Carried on going to Brid Town and City as the fixtures were arranged so they didn't clash, which was a bit rough on Trinity as it affected their gates. Only stopped going to Brid Town when I went to work in Leeds but in 3 years in Leeds only missed one City home game. Went back to Brid but was going to nearly every away game as well as home games so didn't see them much. Then I moved to Hull for 10 years and didn't see them at all. Started going again when I moved back to Brid but wasn't the same as they had changed from amber and black to red. Thing that pleases is me is my 2 lads were born in Hull but we moved back before they started school. Surrounded by kids supporting Man U, Liverpool etc but both supported City and had the only City kits in school. Loved it went we came back after winning promotion after the Cardiff game and we went in the pub and one announced loudly that they could all go on about their adopted clubs, but they would never, ever have the feeling he had from watching his home town club get promoted.
I did missionary work in Bridlington but had to give it up, you couldn't get the fecker's to come out of their basements or attics! The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Used to collect insurance up there for years. Some great folk. When my first lad was born got 72 cards off customers with money in for him and a few teddy bears. Though one reported me to the manager as they said I would have to sit down and wait one Friday night as there was a programme on about Hull and Rovers at Wembley the week before. I said they could pay double next time as I wasn't wasting my time sat there watching that. Fortunately the boss was from Bradford and a big Bradford City fan who had similar feeling regarding rugby league as myself.
Well I suppose I should state an interest here: Born in Hull went to Uni in Naaarch UEA (not UAE) found locals to be "bitter, narrow minded, nasty inbred people who despise outsiders" left to work in Salisbury where locals were "bitter, narrow minded, nasty inbred people who despise outsiders" then Manchester where locals were gangsters have now retired to Brid but dont have a basement or smell of wee (to my knowledge) subject to change without notice
Not what I’d heard. They had to roll the red carpet back up. I don’t stink of piss, therefore they’d know I wasn’t a local.
I know a Lewis C whose grandad had a fish and chips shop in Brid. And is in the Guinness Book of Records. His dad lives in Manchester I think.
Except I’m not from Hull. I’m simply defending it. I have travelled the length and breadth of the UK and there are far worse places than Hull. One of which I’d include is Bridlington - ****hole.
