Kuba witnessed his father stabbing his mother to death when he was 10 years old. His uncle, Jerzy Brzeczek, a former Polish national team captain, encouraged him to keep playing and Kuba was a key part of the great Klopp Dortmund team. Clearly he is made of special stuff.

Great news and signal from the club. Give the lad time to develop under McClaren and maybe a short term loan, I'm confident he could become a first team regular for us. Bags of potential and super attitude.

Smyth extends QPR deal until 2021

PAUL Smyth has committed his future to QPR by signing a one-year extension to his contract, which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2021.

Smyth joined the R’s from Northern Irish side Linfield in 2017. He spectacularly burst onto the scene at Loftus Road by coming off the bench to net the winner against promotion-bound Cardiff City on his debut 12 months ago.

Since then he has made a total of 18 first-team appearances, scoring twice.

I have developed so much since I have been here.
Smyth, 21, told www.qpr.co.uk: “I am absolutely delighted to sign the new deal.

“It means I can concentrate now on my football and doing all I can to break into the first-team in that time.

“I have developed so much since I have been here, and particularly since Steve McClaren came in. He has spoken to me and told me what I need to do and what he wants from me. He has helped me so much.

“My aim now is to carry on developing and then when I get my chance in the first team, make sure I take it.”

Smyth’s attacking style has made him a huge favourite with the R’s fans, and he is aiming to build on that over the coming two years.

“The fans have been great with me,” he added. “They give me a lot of support.

“They pay their money to come and back us, so whenever I play I want to put a show on for them and get them out of their seats.

“Now that I have signed a new deal, hopefully I will get the chance to do that more and more.”

QPR boss McClaren added: “Paul is an exciting talent who is developing all the time so we are delighted to see him extend his stay with us.

“He has got a great work ethic and is eager to learn and improve.

“Like a lot of the players on the fringe of the first team, he hasn’t had much gametime because the ones with the shirts have been doing so well this season.

“That’s been hard for him but I can’t fault his attitude.

“For him to progress, he needs to play games. That’s something we are all very wary of.”

Definitely heading out on loan. Will be interesting to see the impact he makes at a League One club I guess.

I was hoping he’d get the last 10 mins against Leeds in the cup but I guess Smith got the nod due to his presence when defending. He’s definitely a talent so good news.

‘All-Smiles’ Transfer as Thomas joins QPR

The following article appeared in the Birmingham Daily Post on 20th October 1972:

‘Dave Thomas moved from Burnley to Queen’s Park Rangers for £165,000 in a lightning transfer deal yesterday, and afterwards both club managers expressed their satisfaction at the way the move had been handled.

Jimmy Adamson, the Burnley manager, said: “This deal between ourselves and QPR was carried out in the proper manner and if all transfers were carried out in the same spirit, football would be a lot better for it.”

Rangers manager Gordon Jago said: “I have nothing but praise for Jimmy Adamson, Burnley chairman Bob Lord and Dave Thomas for the way this deal was conducted.”

The action began when Jago contacted Burnley on Wednesday afternoon: “I thought Thomas would be way out of my price range, but the answer was ‘yes’ and the player travelled to London later in the evening,” said Jago, who met Thomas and completed the signing around midnight.

“If Burnley had turned down my bid I wouldn’t have told anyone about it because it could have upset Thomas.”

Adamson criticised managers who publicly praise young players with other clubs causing them to feel unsettled.

“Thomas has been unhappy for a while,” he commented. “I blame the system and one or two managers who have made comments which have unsettled him.”

“One manager in particular described Thomas as the finest prospect in Britain – yet this manager has never made an offer for him. When players hear such remarks they expect to go to one of the big clubs for a big fee and collect their five per cent.”

Thomas has left a side leading the Second Division for a club in second place and he was clearly impressed with the set-up at Loftus Road and Rangers’ chances of going up into Division One.

“They are the best team Burnley have played this season,” he said: “We were lucky to get a point off them.”

“I wasn’t happy at Burnley, and I thought I had nothing to lose by moving.” He plans to marry at Christmas.

Thomas makes his Rangers debut at Loftus Road on Saturday against Sunderland. Jago said: “He will play his own game and we’ll play around him. He can express himself on the field just how he wants.”

There can be no questioning Rangers’ ambitions. They have just built a new £170,000 stand, installed £30,000 floodlights and palatial dressing rooms, which cost £27,000. Work has started on lounges and offices costing £70,000, and they have now paid out £275,000 for two new men – Stan Bowles from Carlisle and Thomas.

With his signing of Thomas, manager Jago has lost no time in finding a replacement for midfield player Martyn Busby, who broke his right leg at Fulham on Tuesday night.’

Rangers went on to beat Sunderland 3-2, with two goals from Stanley Bowles and one from Don Givens.

:emoticon-0148-yes: great find, thank you. I absolutely loved seeing Thomas flying down the wing, socks down at his ankles (yes, was allowed in those days). As a new QPR supporter, DT, Stan, Don, Gerry & co got me hooked on the R's and started me on a lifetime rollercoaster ride. Thank you QPR.

That was Ellerslie Road. That cost would be nice. Even nicer if we could spend only £313,000 and get 3 players like Thomas. Bowles and Givens - the one they left out of the reckoning and who cost a measly £38,000. Sadly I think £313,000 just buys you the Tony Fernandes PR machine these days.

He'll keep Manning company on the bench I guess. Very surprised Manning hasn't had a single minute yet since coming back.

John Obi Mikel has signed for Middlesbrough today. An excellent signing for them on a free, but they must be paying him a fortune in wages.

Another club spending serious money in the vain hope of promotion, only 3 can go up and likely to be some big spenders staying for another season in the Championship and FFP will be tightening it's grip on them........
