Right fellas, anyone here owned a boat?

Basically I'm looking at getting one for the canals around here. Always fancied having one as way of taking short breaks on it and see the country via the canal network.

Seen a few recently but realised I know **** all about the rules n regs and costs involved with keeping a boat. Cost of purchase is what it is but fees?

    Any help appreciated

What's your budget, and will you fish as well

Flat bed Kayaks, I rent one from the place here near the river that passes by, perfect for solo or suo comfortable river paddles and fishing if you want (I dont fish)

I'd buy one if the rivers weren't frozen solid in winter, so leasing saves me lots of extra hassle

Budgets not huge but depends on the craft.

Not really looking at kayaks, and not too fussed about fishing

Was thinking something like this (not necessarily this, just first image I came across)

Ah a proper boat with a motor. I dont know feck all about them mate, I like to be able to head 5 minutes to the river, hop in and do a 7 or 8 hour two way trip in late spring and summer, time permitting.

Good luck, your plan sounds awesome.

    Cheers.

Might be a complete failure tbh but always fancied the idea. A nice little escape and better, in my head, than say a caravan

I'm not too far from a mooring etc, within easy walking distance. Something for weekend getaways and short breaks

hire one, it's far cheaper, much less hassle and will be ready when you want to use it.

Around here hiring a canal barge etc is very costly tbh. Besides which you are limited to times you can have it

For me it's the next step up from a man cave tbh. Somewhere to go when I'm pissed off etc.

Add in overnight mooring, licenses, permits etc as well as boat certification, haul out maintenance etc. Sea going craft are better value, and you don't have to spend the night next to a railway track or motorway bridge with other boats rocking you to sleep after spending a day listening to a moped engine.
