Sorry, but this is completely wrong. The decision to leave and the uncertainty about what happens afterwards has already caused severe damage to the UK. Investment is down. The UK gets most of its income from "Invisibles" i.e. finance, insurance, foreign exchange, and these jobs and transactions are moving to Paris and Frankfurt. The financial organisations of those 2 centres had been trying to expand for years, without success. After the referendum they cracked open the Champagne. The WTO trading rules are a minimal set of restrictions on how much you are allowed to use penalties to damage your competitor countries and those trying to sell into your market. Everyone in the world are setting up trading groups to improve on this (with the exception of the genius currently in charge in the US, he pulled out of the Asia-Pacific group). Being dumped out to work under WTO only rules will be a difficult time, and creating other trade deals takes years. Other may want to talk, but most of us will be retired before we see many benefits. The other members of our old pre EC/EU trade group (EFTA) are all aligned with the EU, but are STILL negotiating even after 40 years and have to make concessions to get improved terms, such as freedom of movement, VAT and other tax rules etc. Worse for me is that along with other people who had taken advantage of the EU, I was not even allowed to vote. OK, so I have paid my taxes elsewhere for a while, but the EU citizens who have lived and paid in the UK for may years had no say either. If ex-pats could have voted, there probably would not have been a "leave" vote!
I was being very parochial; about this. Here in Sunderland the majority of voters, by about 60% to 40% voted LEAVE. Our three MP's have continually championed REMAIN. One of them, not seeming to understand the concept of a Referendum has been wittering on about a 'peoples vote' although I fail to see the difference. As has been pointed out, The Labour Leader has, sensibly, kept his detailed plans to himself. It seems though that Labour, as a party are also split on this subject but with a large majority wanting to REMAIN. But as a general principal I see nothing odd about casting a protest vote in a General Election if you disagree strongly with the sitting Member.
Oh right. I see what you mean with regard to the Sunderland MPs. Despite living outside the region, I do keep an eye on the NE news.
Good post ex-pat but if this is the case why did the democratically elected super intelligent Government/ MP's even give us the vote if it is so simple. Every single one of the f*ckers is a lying c*nt just lining their own pockets and couldnt give a flying one about the ordinary person in the street. They gave the electorate a referendum. Once the result of that vote was in then they had a duty to carry out the wishes of the people. They havent. What they have done is thrown their toys out of the pram cos they didnt get the result they wanted. I refer my honourable friend to a line I posted earlier regarding not giving a flying one except for themselves.
There was a referendum. It was voted OUT. If we have another one and the remainers get their wish do we then have another one for the leavers and go for best out of 3? If there is another referendum then democracy is dead in this country.
I agree mate, folk saying 2nd referendum is the answer but why does that trump the first? The whole thing's a mess and if democracy is not seen to be executed it might get a bit less peaceful too! Hope not but there was some fair momentum with the far right pre-referendum and easy to see that coming back and some. Can't we just get on with our lives aaaargh
I voted leave but I am told via the BBC and the educated remainers every day that I didn't know what I was voting for, me and the other 52% . The harder the Brexit the better.
The way politicians bend to the way the wind is blowing is despicable. May insists her deal is the best we can do, but it basically sells us down the river while she claims to be the champion of Brexit. Corbyn's been anti-EU all his political life, but now he has a sniff of power he insists we stay in a customs union, which to my mind means we might as well stay in, full stop. The Lib Dems are just determined to stop Brexit and bugger the fact that a majority voted for it. They can all go to hell in a handcart IMHO....
I voted remain but would probably vote leave if asked again, in the interests of democracy, and shoot myself in the foot in the process at the same time haha. Some things are too important imo
They have shown themselves to be the self serving t@ats we all knew they were. We make Trump look like Churchill we're that embarrassing.
You're just splitting hairs over wording. It's pedantic as ****. My point is clear. How would you like me to word it? He works for a company involved in arms dealing. I still think it's shady as ****. Ok? Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
It was 54-46 at the time of the referendum given leave a 10 point lead, Iast you gov vote just before Christmas gives remainers a 18 point lead, that's a huge swing. Obviously it's impossible to know the true split though Politicians did an appalling job of informing the public what leaving would entail. Failed the country big time, everyone has an MP, they all had the responsibility to deliver the facts. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
Doesn't democracy give people the freedom to change their mind? I'm speaking as a leaver who voted remain cause their wasn't a third option to start preparing to leave in the future. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
You've pressed on my concerns at the time of voting so voted remain even though I want to leave. Ultimately I just didn't trust the government to do it right and sure enough, they triggered Article 50 without any real plan or investment. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
