On paper the side should have been good enough but he should have had Vardy and Maguire on the bench as insurance policies - not doing that leaves Puell open to criticism that he did not take the competition seriously enough (it was our last chance of a trophy ffs! )... Indeed he should probably have started Maguire given he sheer size of Jamille Matt ... quite obvious what they would do at every opportunity ... which doesn't excuse Wes for the dreadful defending ... both goals in fact were caused by amateurish, wholly avoidable, errors by experienced pros ... without those 2 mistakes we would have been quite comfortable ...
I think it's obvious we're crying out for a creative and physically strong addition who also knows where the net is such as Shaqiri, Deeney or Zaha. Having a bit of a nutter on the field can be a huge plus, even if it sometimes means them being red carded (and, tbh, we already have a totally **** record in that area but with none of the benefits!)
I must agree that putting out a weakened side should mean we still win most of our games against lower sides but every now again we will go flat on our face playing this way but I feel it's worth the risk when giving chances to youngsters! However that was not the case last night (only one youngster in the team). The Harlow game still in my memory from the past and hurts still until now. I don't mind losing a game now and again but with the caveat that players give 100% on the field. Iheanacho has to go he does not look good enough or even interested, People on here keep saying Okazaki is past it but I would have him before Iheanacho every time. Most of all Puel has to go IMO he is the most negative, useless and clueless manager who will never change his style of play. Southampton asked him to develop a plan B and be more flexible in his style of play or he would be sacked He refused to change and the rest is history!
