They might be "thereabouts", but they haven't actually been "there" since the mid eighties <ok>

Strangely I'm getting conflicted about United since Solksjaer arrived. I am pleased to see United pick up wins partly because I always liked Solksjaer, but mainly because I disliked Mourinho so much. Seeing United play with joie de vivre after Misery guts left gives me great pleasure.

What position does this guy Joie de Vivre play? He sounds like a happy fellow with a bit of life in him in fact the very antithesis of Jose Marinho.

Went to school near Ipswich when the likes of Mariner, Mills, Geddis, Wark, Beattie and Butcher played for them and the great Bobby Robson was their manager. So i used to go and see them play when i managed to break out of school, so they are probably my second team

Your Man £ity bit got me thinking about how happy fans would be if their team got sold to multi billionaires who pumped money in like City etc.

I mean Pompey pumped in money and won a cup and made many fans happy. Then it all burst (as I’m sure many of you feared).

But the true wealth into City, Chelsea etc would we all be much happier.

I saw something on here recently about Leicester fans sense of entitlement and a few here have suffered that as well. Is it just a different model nowadays that people demand instant gratification?

I suppose your expectations are based on your experiences. Saints trapped me in Branfoot's last season, so I've experienced seasons of spirited scrabbling, some goodish seasons, the slide through the leagues, near disaster, happy and exciting times, then back to scrabbling with not quite so much spirit (until now hopefully). Basically, nothing surprises me. If you joined after the Leihberrs bought the club, you might feel outrage where I feel disappointment. I think most older fans (time with the club more than actual age) probably all have a sense of inevitability that the bad times would roll around eventually....though on the good side we also know that flirting with the bottom three doesn't necessarily mean relegation. Keep your GD comparatively reasonable (are you watching, Saints) and you will probably be alright for 20+ years.

It is fifty years ago this year when I quit playing football that I first went to the Dell. Time flies when you are enjoying yourself.

If we were taken over by a multi-billionaire who pumped huge amounts of money into us and bought us the league, I'd probably lose interest in Portsmouth. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't, and also, where's the achievement in winning the league just by throwing money at it? I'd rather win the league on merit, than on cash. At least this season in League 1 we haven't got the biggest budget or even the second biggest budget so success will mean more. I know Michael Eisner isn't exactly poor, but the money is mostly used to build up infrastructure and wages and transfer fees are being kept at a relatively sustainable level (despite the calls of some idiot Portsmouth fans for a spending splurge...). And even in our so-called halcyon days, we weren't outspending everyone else... We were simply paying top 6 wages (transfer fees were relatively low) with bottom 3 infrastructure.... Not exactly the same as Man £ity. Plus, I was much younger, more naive and less disillusioned then. And I hadn't discovered the glory of the NFL.

Hard to separate merit from buying success. There's one extreme where you buy a whole new team and the other extreme where you spend nothing and your team work their socks off (hard to imagine that would get you real success in the EPL). Building a team is about getting the right players for your chosen style and that will take some money. We were a 'rich' side in League 1, but I like to think that there was merit in selecting the right players and getting them in the right spirit as well. Just making the point that you can't draw a line separating merit from money...you need some of both.

Man Utd's next fixtures are all winnable with the exception of Spurs, I would say. I think it will be fascinating to see how they perform when they next play Liverpool. Had OGS been appointed for the Anfield fixture, I am sure the result would have been different. A 19 point difference means that they cannot overhaul Liverpool but it will be fascinating to see a league table in May starting from the beginning of December onwards. Makes you wonder that had they got rid of Mourinho earlier, they could have been challenging more seriously. OGS currently has to be a shoo-in for manager of the month but I would not be surprised is he is the manager of the season. I still think Liverpool will falter at some point.

Me too, I want us to go back to being the club that produces our own, plays fast, exciting football and gives the elite a bloody nose on occasions.

I'd love it for awhile, probably until we won the PL or something. Would be great to wind up all my mates who support the big clubs, would also be great to see Saints playing in the CL and actually being able to compete at the very top level regardless of how that was achieved. Like anything though I much prefer being able to moan and bitch about how **** it is so I lose interest pretty quickly if any sports team I follow actually becomes good.

Lots of teams spend a lot of money but don't come close to winning the league. It's no guarentee, you still need to recruit wisely and have the right manager in place. Like Fran said, we were rich in League 1 and spent a lot compared to others in that league. Did that ruin my experience of that time with those players? Nope, it was amazing.
Watching nice football played by good players, scoring goals, winning games. Sounds pretty good to me.

Explains why you're a Vikings fan!

That's true, I was more talking about the balanced approach that you mentioned, rather than having a team of free transfers necessarily, nor a team of superstars bought from around the world. I'm a pragmatist and realise we'd have to spend some money to be able to compete... Just sensible spending pleas.e
