How much investment would it take for us to get autos?

How much coin do you think Bates would have to throw at us to guarantee auto promotion? This is obviously a hypothetical question as I don’t believe the funds necessary will be available. Also we are talking transfers here rather than wage bill & presume that all our squad is fit.

I would like to see a new LB & RB in at the club with Lees moving to the centre to partner Paddy

    LB- 1.5 Mill
RB- 1 Mil Lichaj maybe or reinstate Connolly

    LW- 2.5 Mil
    CF- 3.0 Mil

Personally I think that would do the trick & get us back to the Prem, am I being unrealistic & would we really need to spend anymore/less?

Interesting to see your opinions on where you would strengthen & how much you think it would cost to seal Autos.

It strikes me with recieving £1m + for Schmichel £2m for Gradel yet Bates is now saying you can only have £1.75 where as the rest gone and he therefore gave him nothing to spend this summer if he hadn,t sold players .ALSO WHERE as the TV MONEY GONE and what about the expected £2m= from the SCUM match

We have a quality goalkeeper, some decent centrebacks, 2 energetic young midfielders, some good wide players and some good strikers.

To improve our team to a level that could win promotion, we'd need a rightback (Connolly is decent and consistent but isn't really good enough for the top end) and a leftback, a centreback and a proper ball winning midfielder.

I think Aidy White will improve if he gets the chance over this season and Tom Lees will as well.

Probably about £2million overall or just even a few of the free transfers that we didn't want to give wages to - ie. Woodgate.

    Leeds60 <ok>

If you could account for all the missing money including those you have listed above any many more we could go out & get what we need for promotion, which is why the majority of Leeds fans feel cheated.

Need a good CB (Heresy I know but IMO Paddy is very rusty) who is good in the air, LB that stops the LM worrying so much and a CF or LW that can run through midfields and at defences - not necessarily scoring goals - and pull them both out of shape.

On our money we won't get all four so for the CB, LB and LW or CF; £250k, £500k, £1M. Realistically double that will be needed.

Not sure why there is the facination in spending money on fees. There was a similar debate earlier in the season. You quote £3M for a striker. Just looking at transfers in and out of Cardiff you could have had 4 proven goal scorers for less than that if you could convince them to join.

    Bothroyd - Free
    Chopra - £1.5M
    Earnshaw - Free
    Miller - £750k

More of the problem will be the wages than the transfer fee. Often, the higher the fee, the higher the wages, though I can't imagine the 4 above will be on small wages.

Can't think of (m)any £1M+ full backs in our division either.

I think with Keough and McCormack up front you'll get goals but need someone to supply the ammo.

There aren't many teams in our division with cash to splash. West Ham and Leicester being the exceptions. Most others have only made the odd reasonable size signing. We've spent under £2M on 10 new signings.

I get the point of the thread is about guaranteeing autos, but even big spending doesn't guarantee success. WH look favourites but don't see Leicester running away at the top.

All good points mate, what I was trying to get at is how much of a gamble financially would it take to get us to compete at the top end of the championship all season <ok>

Going on what ccfcremotsesupport has said, we'd need 4 players in. A CB, Rightback, Leftback and CM. The club clearly see that as well, because they tried to bring in Lichaj, had some leftbacks on trial and got Darren O'Dea. The only trouble is, the club's 'solutions' to these problem positions hasn't been good enough.

It's a fine line Bucks and take your point. There's no magic formula though unfortunately.

We took a different route last year. Didn't spend on big transfer fees, but took high wages for loanees (though parent clubs helped a bit  ). We still didn't make it.

We signed a new left back this year (Taylor). As a result, last years first choice (Naylor) has been squeezed out. It was a close decision, but if you are interested I'll drive him up myself.

We signed Taylor on a free from Middlesburgh and to be fair, looks good, the best we've had for a while (not that it's saying much). Naylor came from Celtic last year and has been a nightmare. One of DJ's old Wolves boys. I can only imagine he was better first time round. Nearly as bad as our loan signing JLloyd Samuel. He's a free agent as well. I doubt you could make a good one between them.

We Got O'dea on loan from Celtic who is a ROI fringe player as CB & he hasn't started too well for us either, maybe it says something about the standard of Scottish football if these guys are/were getting into a top team in that division. JLloyd Samuel was also on trial with us (as Josh pointed out) & got an injury then Grayson declared that was the last we will see of him, I think his attitude was questionable so keep an eye on that one! <ok>

It was aledged that Samuel was one of our players out on the lash before the Middlesbrough game last season when we were still in the running for autos. we were 3-0 down after 20 mins and the shepherd's crook came out for him shortly after. As you say, questionable attitude.

Lets see what the loan window brings. After 12 players out and 10 in so far for us it's still a time to wait and see. Relatively happy with what I've seen so far. Top third finish for us with the possibility of the playoffs I think. A good loanee or two may improve my forecast. With the fire sales at Coventry and Brum, it will be more about the teams that have gone backward than our teams moving forward.

Another tough, topsy turvey season in the championship.

    Agreed <ok>

Also I think your boys have started well when a lot of fans wrote you off which adds weight to your agruement about spending your way out of this crazy league!
