And gave the winner 4lb, ground looked far from ideal too. Plenty of soft in that good to soft.

Dunno how Sensulano won that - was being scrubbed along from a long way out. Glad she did though!

Very weak looking renewal of the International Hurdle.

Brain Power was cut to as low as 14/1 for the Champion Hurdle but I can't shake the memory of how badly he ran in the Festival race when I backed him ante-post a couple of seasons back. He weakened desperately that day and was 30 lengths behind Buveur D'air, more or less forcing him into Novice Chasing.

Summerville Boy was awful today and you can have 50/1 on him for the Champion Hurdle now.

Sad to see The New One so poor today. He has been on the wane and never really came on from the Champion Hurdle race where he was deemed by some to have been unlucky after being slightly hampered before coming through for third. For me The New One was simply a shade short of top class and he mopped up some weak races, normally at very restrictive odds. His career was a barometer of whenever he was not odds-on, he tended to get beaten. A good sort but not the most fluent of jumpers and just a shade short of Champion class.

Buveur D'air as short as 4/6 now and any Evens left is probably like finding money in the street. Laurina is 20 lbs behind him on official ratings, yet only 5/1. Go figure.

I wish The New One a very happy retirement. Won half of his 40 races and a million quid+ in prize money. Who wouldn't be over the moon to own such a wonderful servant to the NH sphere. His record shows he was just short of top class but I remain absolutely convinced he wins the 2014 Champion Hurdle but for the interference from the tragic fall of Our Conor. I've just watched it again and the idea that he was slightly hampered is quite frankly laughable. 5 lengths at least and had to regain his momentum from almost a standing start. He certainly divided opinion on this forum as I recall. I reckon a few never forgave him for sticking it to a Mullins hotpot in the 2013 Neptune. Happy retirement ol boy.

I was on The New One ante post for his Neptune win but was on Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle where The New One was 3rd.

I watched that race hundreds of times and did more or less a frame by frame review of the race to demonstrate why The New One was not an unlucky loser. Of course, you will always convince some viewers while having absolutely no effect on convincing others no matter how hard you try.

The New One had ample time to get back into that race but watching it again he simply fails to summon the necessary pace to get at the front two. It is only when the front pair settle down to fight out the finish that The New One closes up visually as the other two are giving everything and he was held decisively by almost three lengths. It is not as if he was flying and beaten a neck.

I had side bets with plenty of people in the following year's Champion Hurdle and was the one doing the laughing as The New One could do no better than 5th, finishing behind Jezki again.

In his twenty wins, The New One was odds on eleven times, sometimes very strongly so. Any horse is only as good as the times he plies his trade in and The New One was fortunate to have been around in an era short of quality. A grand old horse true enough but you could normally tell when he was unlikely to win.

Unbelievable that on his retirement people still want to crab the achievements of a truly wonderful NH horse who won over a million in prize money. I guess he won sub standard Neptune and Aintree hurdles huh. Akin to people saying George Best wasn’t a great as he never won a World Cup.
I loved the horse from day one and took plenty of criticism on his behalf. I will always remember him as the horse who sent the Irish Festival banker packing.
He has been the type of horse that makes jump racing far more interesting than the flat.
I wish him a happy and long retirement.

Exactly. He was unfortunate to bump into Hurricane Fly and Faugheen when he did but them's the breaks. A great servant to connections and a thoroughly likable horse.

Hey ho, I have a different opinion of the horse.

All the catty remarks only show how some people cannot tolerate someone having another opinion.

I play the ante-post market a lot but I have had numerous big priced winners over the last five years.

When you are hitting 40/1, 33/1, 25/1 and 20/1 winners, it makes room for loads of losing bets.

I had Saxon Warrior at 20/1 for the 2000 Guineas this season, I also had him at 33/1 for the Derby and 66/1 for the double. It wasn't to be but I had to invest very little to have a good interest in the races.

Scoff all you want lads. I have evidence of all my bets on Racing Forums on the internet.

In which Championship races did The New One finish second to either Hurricane Fly or Faugheen? If he didn't finish second to those specific horses then he would not have won the races anyway if they had been absent.

The more realistic way of looking at it is that The New One was FORTUNATE to have operated in an era where there was so little talent that he was able to go off at odds of 2/7, 1/2, 1/2, 2/5, 4/9, 2/11, 1/3, 4/7, 1/6, 2/11 in half of his wins.

If you put a £1 on each of those ten races, you would have got back £13.56 for your £10 investment, a profit of £3.56. It's hardly much to get excited about.

The New One DID floor Pont Alexander at Cheltenham but Rule The World was also another 4 and a half lengths clear of the Irish horse and it panned out that the Mullins horse just didn't have a good career and was off the track for 998 days after his Neptune run. I see little glory in recalling The New One beating such a horse.

Another factor is that The New One lost all three of his really close races over the years. I had a decent bet on him when Zarkandar outbattled him at Aintree and he had earlier been beaten at odds on by a neck by At Fisher's Cross. My Tent Or Yours got the better of him by a half length in the Christmas Hurdle labelled the battle of the non-battlers by some, as both horses seemed to find little for pressure at times.

Enough reasons for me to see the horse in a slightly different light to some. It's all about cold hard data for me if I am betting on races. Watching just for fun is fine sometimes but some races are more interesting with a small bet on and for me The New One always seemed to get beat when he was backable odds.

My opinion only of course but I don't see the need for jibes and ridicule just because I have a different opinion.

Sarcasm is not a debating tool, neither will it help anyone find winners.

This is one hell of a childish forum. Grow up lads.
