Hello PN, hope you and everyone else are well? Could you tell me what has happened to Eastern Anthem? RP says he's still with Godolphin, though Godolphin's website has no mention. Is he at stud or still in training somewhere? Thanks VE Index to all other Ask PN threads
Hey Ron, hope you're good? Just passing through, hoping to catch a few of the old faces and miss one huge one! (hope himself isn't on here!) ;-)
Hi pn i know nap means best bet but where does the term "nap" come from - someone once told me it has something to do with napoleon
Hi pn can you tell me is it true that robbie fowler tried to register a horse under the name "ahorse" and another horse under the name "another horse" - would have made for interesting commentary
ADM not far off, nap derives from the card game napoleon and a nap hand is the best bet in the game. so nap means best bet,
VE - I can't find any trace of Eastern Anthem either! It is possible that he has been retired or sold privately - the RP is never any good at keeping up with ownership changes. I'll dig around and see what I can find out. ADM, I've not heard that story re the horse names myself, but it is totally plausible! Weatherbys are very fussy about horse names so they will reject anything that is likely to cause offence and/or confusion!
VE - I've been on to my contacts at Godolphin and Darley and can confirm that EASTERN ANTHEM is no longer in training. He is back with Darley having a break and I believe they may be trying to find him a home at stud somewhere.
Minty, a former top flight Rugby League player in Sydney owned a dog called Nads. He and his mates would stand in the grandstand yelling ... go Nads.
i have been told that fowler tried to register three horses with the names "ahorse", "anotherhorse", and "somehorse" - imagine the commentary "into the straight and some horse is leading by a length to another horse closely followed by a horse"
Wasn't there a horse called "My Face", named in the hope of hearing lots of women in the crowd simultaneously shouting "Come on my face" ??????
The "MY FACE" story is a bit of an urban legend in that no horse ever ran in Britain with the name - Weatherbys are very strict about names that could cause offence and/or confusion. However according to pedigreequery.com there have been 5 horses named MY FACE over the years, most recently a 5yo in the USA who managed to place 3 times from 6 runs. http://www.pedigreequery.com/my+face4
pedigree query is a most interesting site! I just love the way that you can go right back to the 3 founding sires of the thoroughbred
Lanwades Stud keep sending me reminders of how well Sir Percy is doing with his first crop. He was often touted on the old 606 board as being the next big failure at Stud before he'd even had a foal but he seems to be getting winners and the cleverly named Emmuska was a good one today. What's your view, pN, on his first results? Is it as should be expected or has he done better than he should have done? (Not that I'm going to reply to Lanwades!!: sadly).
Hi Princess. Just noticed Power passed through the ring for 50k. I don't know much about buying at auction, but given this colts decent confirmation and pedigree, why didn't any bloodstock agents snap him up?
The thing that has always been against SIR PERCY is the numbers. I'm not in work so dont have the figures to hand, but he only covered about 70 mares in his first season, giving him around 50 or so foals. Compare this to the likes of DARK ANGEL and RED CLUBS who have 100+ foals in their first crop and it's easy to see why he could struggle. I think he has got off to a good start, he has certainly had enough winners to keep breeders interested for the 2012 season, but to really secure himself he needs a few Group winners early on next year. Dexter, when buying yearlings you are not looking at the finished article. While a horse may appear good on paper, he may reach the sales ring during a growth spurt that will make him appear gangly or he may not move very well. In answer to your other question, yes most horses, if they're going to be sold, will pass through the sales as a yearling. Foal sales are reasonably popular, especially in Japan, but you are a long way from the horse having finished growing and maturing. As the yearling sales tend to take place in the autumn, bar the odd exception, the horses are close to looking as they will at 2 so are therefore more racy looking. Thoroughbreds are unusual in that they grow and mature physically faster than any other breed of horse. Of course we have bred them that way, but it is why they are strong enough to be raced at 2 when most other breeds of horse are not doing serious ridden work till 4 or 5. Of course TBs will keep growing until they are about 5, but they do the majority of it in their first 2 years of life.
