    Football, Chelsea

New Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas has had a decent start to life in his new post. An opening day draw at Stoke started the inevitable murmurs, but the ship has steadied to leave the Blues two points behind Manchester United and Manchester City three games into the new season.

Before the season was under way, much was made about the 33-year-old manager's ability to control the infamously strong personalities of the Chelsea dressing room, many of whom are roughly the same age as him.

While there hasn't been any visible problems of this nature so far, some of the signs on the pitch are that Villas Boas ought to be circumnavigating the problem all together.

Even in the games that Chelsea have won, there has been plenty of talk from their supporters online and on the call-in radio shows about how the old guard are holding the side back at present.

There have been the first murmurs of dissent against the once undroppable Frank Lampard, with some saying he is slowing attacks down. Fernando Torres continues to infuriate as he struggles to rediscover some semblance of his former glories.

Even Ashley Cole, once the most dependable left-back in the world, has had a question mark put against his name by some, including - if rumours are to be believed - Villas Boas himself.

The Portuguese coach's summer signings have been very much forward looking, but his young guns have mainly had to settle for places on the bench so far.

Roman Abramovich is not exactly renowned for his patience during a period of rebuilding, but the very fact that he appointed Villas Boas suggests he may at last be looking to create something lasting at Stamford Bridge.

So, should the new manager be taking a more ruthless approach to the stalwarts and have begun to build a new team from the outset of his reign? After all, title rivals Manchester United seem to be benefiting from their enforced rejuvenation.

Its a good article mate. I think Viilas Boas knows what needs to be done but the key is he needs at least 2 seasons to be able to build his own team. Its very hard to walk into a club which has such big influences and personalities and straight away say your no longer part of the clubs plans. I think he has already made a few big statements already, starting Drogba and Anelka on the bench for the first game against Stoke, and pulling Kalou off after 30 mins vs west brom.
The likes of Drogba, Malouda, Lampard and Anelka who were all key figures and startes under the Ancelotti regime are all now under serious threat for their places. With the emergence and continued progress of Sturridge and young Josh, with the exciting Mata and the raw pace and power of Lukaku, this should be the foundation of the Chelsea side for years to come.
Will AVB be given the time? that is the key

Meireles I reckon. Hopefully McEachran breaks through too.

I personally would have sold Anelka, Malouda and Kalou in the summer. They can all still do a job for us, but I think that AVB needed to be a bit more ruthless and really start to rebuild the squad. I would like to see a forward three of Mata Torres Sturridge with Lukaku and Drogba as back ups for the strikers role and that makes Anelka and Kalou surplus to requirements. I would have also liked to have seen us sign De Bruyn to give us more options out wide, but I have a feeling that will happen in the future.

This is a massive season for Kakuta, if he can really start to show what he promised when he first broke into the first team we will have yet another option upfront. PVA too will have a great chance to shine for Wigan this season and I have great hopes for him. Josh has had a request to go out on loan turned down so I am hoping that means he is going to get more game time. Both Josh and Sturridge are two of the most exciting talents in English football right now. Piazon has already trained with the first team and is moving to London in the next week or two, although he wont be able to play until January and Davila has gone out on loan to Vitesse. These are two of the most exciting young attacking midfielders from the other side of the Atlantic and I have high hopes for them both (and hope they don't do a 'Di Santo').

So we already have some really exciting young talent on our books at the club not forgetting the likes of Chalobah, Lalkovic, Bertrand etc and I am hoping that AVB will start bringing as many as he can through this season. I can see the logic in keeping the team settled and slowly introducing the younger players as well as the signing of Meireles (surely a stop gap player?) and would like to see Cahill come in in January so we have the potential to put a team out in a couple of season like this

    Lakuka
    Mata/Kakuta Sturridge/ De Bruyn

    Piazon/Davila

    Josh Ramires

    PVA Cahill Luiz VDW

    Cech/Courtois

Of course this is all depending on the youngsters all coming through and establishing themselves, but that could be a team that could flourish and be around for several years

Ess, I have said this before and Chelsea fans have taken the point. If AVB starts a couple of youngsters ( I am not talking about a whole team of them) and Chelsea start losing, he will come under pressure from above. Youngsters are often inconsistent. Josh is now the same age as Wilshere was this time last year and Wilshere, if fit, would start for England if there was a World Cup final tomorrow. I don't want to make comparisons because Josh may develop a bit later, but he must look at Wilshere with whom he is compared and I can see why he wanted to go on loan.

I can see why Josh wanted to go on loan and can only assume that he is being earmarked for more starts this season than he did last. I saw him play several times last season and he does look ready for more game time and was very impressive for someone so young.

I can also see the wisdom of not making wholesale changes immediately and introducing the youngsters slowly, but I believe that Sturridge, Josh and PVA are good enough to start for us with Sturridge being the most likely to play. We have the raw talent of several youngsters that may or may not make it at the very highest level, but have shown very encouraging signs so far. You've got to hand it to Fergie, he's chucked a fair few youngsters in at the deep end they have generally done quite well. He's making a transition of the team whilst blooding youngsters and staying a top team getting results. Even as a Chelsea fan you have to take your hat off to him!

I agree Ess. He mixes youngsters with the Giggs and Ferdinand's. Arsenal's youngsters tend to fend for themselves and Chelsea are too cautious in introducing them. Maybe both our teams as well as taking our hat off to Fergie should learn from him and copy him.
