Casual racism is totally unacceptable.

During the last month or so there have been several posts on our board which are totally unacceptable.

No one moderator or forum member has sought to challenge or indeed express offence/dismay at any of these racist posts. This to my mind makes everyone complicit by acceptance of a long outdated way of thinking.

You should all hang your heads in shame and some of you have even given a like to such posts.

There is no banter where racism is concerned only prejudice based on the colour of someones skin.

People who have to endure racism can suffer from anxiety, depression and the feeling that they are an unequal member of society which potentially has a massive effect on their physical and mental health.

This is no joking matter...it's actually a disgrace.

Mate, there are posters on here who routinely sail close to the wind, going back much longer than the past month.

If there are specific posts recently which cross the lines you need to call them to account publicly and/or to the mods, and I have no desire to undermine a situation which clearly concerns you deeply in light of your OP - I haven't been on here much for some time though I try to keep abreast of opinions, so may have missed some of the items you refer to.

As a potentially "foreign" contributor from the wider UK nation though, can I say that racism is not always skin-colour dependant.

Personally, I agree with you that many of the English sh1tehawks still think they rule the world, which is clearly not the case when it comes to Rugby Union.

No Chesh, the European Cup of Nations doesn't count.

Racism doesn't just belong to the blacks

 

Intersting responses so far, seems to be a mixture of defiance and insults at the temerity of questioning the use of casual racism on our board.

Defiance I can sort of understand as freedom of thought, expression and speech are things I hold dear. What I would point out though is whether we like it or not the demographic nature of the UK has changed considerably since we were all young. Those changes means that certain uses of language are now deemed racist or casually racist when poor attempts at humour are made at the expense of someones colour.

Many young Leeds fans today will be black, asian or mixed race and hopefully they will be looking for Leeds forums to join and participate in. So if your right of freedom of expression is more important to you than the hurt and harm you can cause to a young persons life by making them feel different or excluded then I guess you will carry on regardless as is your right.

Anyone insulting me for raising this topic is making it unequivocally clear where they stand on the subject of racism and should be judged accordingly.
