Great resilience to come back from 2 down with 10 men. Got to say I don’t think that’s a red- yes he’s late and definitely a yellow but it’s not reckless or dangerous - he’s just a bit late as the Walsall lad gets there first after a poor first touch from Power. Walsall player has hammed it up and the ref has bought it. Also don’t think his first one was a red either. We do seem to be treated a lot harsher than other teams at present - Wickham’s number 18 was kicking owt above grass height last week and was allowed to get away with it till the last 10 minutes - he’d been pulled for at least 15 fouls before then but not cautioned for persistent infringement.
Think we faced the same problems again today a couple of their players were very cute and the ref was out of his depth by all accounts. I have watched the sending off now that I have cooled down a bit, and it was very harsh imo, the manager says we are going to appeal the decision and hopefully we will get the rub of the green this time. Having said that Max must start using his head or he will wreck his own career, which would be a shame, but he is costing us dear and living dangerously.
Jack Ross did not believe Max Power should have been sent off and has confirmed Sunderland will appeal the decision. The 25-year-old will be banned for the next five games, though the visit of Notts County in the Checkatrade Trophy means it will effectively be six. Power saw red in the 23rd minute of the 2-2 draw with Walsall, shown a straight red for a late tackle on Liam Kinsella after losing control of the ball. It is Power’s third red card in eight League starts this season. Ross gave a passionate defence of Power in his post-match press conference following the League One draw at the Banks's Stadium. "It is not a sending off," said Ross. "This season I try and be fairly measured with all my comments, even with officials, at times we have had some decisions go against us. "If you take Max in isolation, I think your gut tells you at the time - having been experienced in playing and coaching - and against Oxford I could see why it was given, Bradford is an easier one. Today, my gut reaction at the time is that it isn't even a yellow card. "I have had the benefit of watching it back, it isn't even a yellow card. "If it isn't overturned, I would be amazed. "It is a huge decision to make at that time of the game and it is not a red card, you can't put up an argument for it being a red card. "It is hugely frustrating, we were very good in that opening period of the game, I don't want to be disrespectful and say we would have definitely won the game but in the opening period we were very good and it had an impact on the rest of the game, as we know." When pressed on whether Sunderland will appeal the decision, Ross added: "Without a shadow of doubt. "If I had no TV replays I would appeal it, I knew at the time it wasn't a red. I have watched it and it isn't even close. That is only my opinion, other people's opinion that matter on it. "I asked the ref at half-time and he said for serious foul play. Naturally, I disagreed with that. I didn't speak to him at full-time. I try and keep myself and emotions in check. "I was hugely frustrated with large aspects of the performance today." Ross revealed the midfielder apologised to Ross in the Sunderland dressing room but the Scot insists he has nothing to apologise for. Ross said: "He is apologetic to me but it is ridiculous for him to be apologetic as he doesn't even give the referee a decision to make, he doesn't commit properly, it is nothing. "He is concerned as we know the ramifications if it doesn't get overturned and it has a huge bearing on our season as well. "Lets not take this in anyway related to the other red cards, in isolation today, it is the wrong decision."
Think appeal is right thing to do but don’t hold out much hope - FA tend to back the ref. On Power - His first 2 reds were definitely avoidable, especially the second one, but the challenge today- think he had to make it, not sure he could pull out of that one. Given his previous good record hopefully he’ll calm down a bit and settle nicely into a success SAFC career
Having watched that back, that ain’t a red is it? Bullshit. Great take by Gooch, lovely job. Bit of an escape great character again, it’ll have to do!
From the iffy view I had on my phone it looked a red. Maybe a better view might change my mind. Maybe the fact he lost control of the ball went against him.
Stupid challenge again from Power. He loses the ball then rushes in pointlessly late I saw that and had to watch it back a few time to figure out who it was. Think he was just hyper as ****, the nutter
The referee was so bad we ended up laughing at his decisions, even at 2-0. The sending off was a massive game changer and the referee just guessed. Shame as it was a good game up til then.
Nice one mate! You'd have got good odds on Sid the Mackem being the first to invade the pitch today .... ... and you'd have won
Well it's all set up nicely for next week's cuptie. if we keep 11 on the pitch we'll progress into round three. if Power wins his appeal do you think Jack will play him.?
I'm sure he would yeah because he's adamant that Power didn't do anything wrong. Not that he will win the appeal.
I’m not a Mackem fella, or alternatively from Teeside. Oops you didn’t manage to beat little old Walsall... that’s all. Wasn’t this meant to be an easy League for you?
Luton have Sunderland, Barnsley & Portsmouth to play, in consecutive games, in January. Just saying ....
