we were getting ovverrun in midfield, he`d already dropped Campbell back to try and counter it prior to the substitution.

Well he is supposed to be a midfielder, I get that. Surely there are U23players who could do a better job than Stewart or just play somebody out of position
I won't pretend to know how capable the U23 lads are, I think it says a lot that Batty as a graduate is miles ahead of him, Henriksen also, and Irvine, who for me is an attacking mid rather than cm is also miles ahead of him, I think if there were a capable CM option in the U23s Adkins would prob chuck them in, but on a day like today when he needed to add something in cm, there wasn't another genuine option on the bench so he was a bit hamstrung really
