I had MPFL Reconstruction surgery last Wednesday at Spire in Anlaby . Surgery went well but the pain is something else , the pain killers take the edge off but not a great deal of relief . I was wondering if anyone on here has had this or similar knee surgery and how long your recovery was,
Settle in for my knee story (it’s a long one...mind you, no rush, you’ll have **** all else to do for a while!) In one tackle playing rugby I did the folllowing Snapped an ACL Ruptured a PCL Snapped my Lateral ligament (somehow both ends...still not sure how) Had the lower end of a hamstring tendon pulled out of the bone so it pinged back up my leg curled up half way up my thigh My MPFL was the only bit of my knee in one piece and that was what I’d had previous injuries to! The surgeon said I couldn’t have snapped my hamstring, it must be just muscle wastage (despite the fact that one of the hard chords at the back of my knee was completely missing) When I woke up the scar was like a foot long shark bite...looked like he’d had both ****ing elbows in working on it! When he came to see me he told me I had snapped my hamstring after all...which is what I’d been telling him for months! Recovery wise it was painful, but Kapake helped (basically knocked me out) I had a problem with nerves too either snapped or damaged during surgery so my leg was numb below the knee. That gradually reduced to pins and needles, and the area of the pins and needles reduced (over years!) but I still have permanent pins and needles on the top of my foot about 20 years later. Physio was ****ing agony because I had my knee set at 30 degrees for months. I assume so they could have the fun of torturing me by forcing it to move later on. Excruciating. Gradually worked on movement and strength but had a full leg brace on for 7 months (without it before the op I could move the bottom half of my leg inwards about 30 degrees. With no pain as I had no nerves) 12 months off work and even then I went back a bit early I think Other than that it all went fine! Actually seriously it did go fine. That knee is no problem now apart from if I don’t do any exercise for a bit so I need to stay fairly active. I did play rugby again afterwards, to check I could, but only one game then retired. Played football a few times and been ok. Run 5k a few times a week and after the recovery I took up snowboarding! Sliding down mountains on a board is good for my knee...I’ve decided! Good luck, I do feel your pain
I also feel your pain. Whilst I haven't had a knee replacement, I have had three total hip replacements. One caused by my first one snapping. Your pain will be quite severe are first. Recovery is quite slow but the pain gets easier each week. My main advice is to get on your feet and don't let the pain stop you. I promise you it will get better and will be more than worth what you are going through. Obviously the first week is the worst. Get sleep when you need it. Hope this helps and good luck. Keep your recovery head up too. Btw it is ok to feel sorry for yourself and get a bit down but don't let it take over or win. I hope I have put that in an understandable way. Tramadol (strong pain killer)was my friend for a while but I tried to ease myself off it and I'm so glad that I did.
I’ve got a blister, it burst today. Hope you’re back up on your feet soon & getting around as soon as. Me? I’ve not put a timeline on it but I’ll battle on.
I got a massive red spot come up on the end of my nose. Been doing WC Fields impressions all day. Ahh yes. Don't drink water fish **** in it. Ahh yesss
That sounds like a car crash not a rugby tackle , i could not imagine that kind of pain. They also removed some ligament from the back of my knee and screwed that to my knee cap and thigh bone as well. The crutches are a twat to master, i keep dropping one and not able to pick it up, very frustrating.
Yes, remember the time you took a bang on the knee, ended up mincing about with a cage round your leg. Sure you dipped a round that day! ... or was it me?
Was the ligament to replace your damaged one? They used something out of my thigh to replace my lateral ligament It is painful, but that will pass As was said earlier try not to let it get you down. When you’re able to work on it then I’d try and do everything the physio advises as much as you can. Despite my injury it really is ok now. I’m conscious of it but it doesn’t stop me doing anything (including stupidly trying freestyle snowboarding and launching myself ineptly off jumps and up half pipes) Good luck
Well, the worsts over, only will get better from here, I'm sure in the long run it will be worth it. One painful thing comes to mind, I arrange a 5 aside game for my son at Haltemprise for his birthday and agreed to ref the game. The day came and I was delayed getting back from overseas, so called my golfing partner and asked if he would do it, and he agreed, He blew the whistle to start the game, pushed off to start running and snapped his Achilles tendon. He couldn't play golf for a year, I wasn't the flavour of the month.
I know someone who snapped his Achilles, had an operation to repair it and then was in his last physio session before returning to work when the physio bent his foot up a bit too much...and snapped it again! (Can’t have been very well mended first time mind you) Back to square one for him
