Just read the HDM article about HCC committing £150k in an attempt to get Hull accepted as a host city for the next RL World Cup. Geraghty has rubbished Brady's attempt claiming it is a waste of money. He then goes onto have his usual swipe at Hull City and football claiming that even when City were in the Premier League 'and all the big teams were coming to Hull' it didn't contribute anything to the local economy ? This claim goes unchallenged by the HDM, no surprise there.
He claims it is a myth that big sporting occasions add to the local economy. It was only a couple of months ago when he was claiming that City 'couldn't even sell out the stadium in the Premier League'
I distinctly remember the KC being sold out for every home fixture for two years. Didn't those people spend a penny piece anywhere else in the city ? Didn't any away fans book a hotel room ? I remember on one occasion when the city centre, and the Ibis hotel was full of WHU fans on the Friday night and again on the Saturday night after the game. The pubs in town were often packed to the rafters with away fans on match days. Did I dream it that Hull Trains even altered their timetable to get people to and from London to coincide with City's kick off times ? Where the parties of Dutch and Scandanavian fans I saw and spoke to around the city and in the stadium at that time a figment of my imagination ?
Geraghty held high office on the local council for virtually all his working life. **** knows how.

    Terry who?!
Still bitter with Brady over his deselection so a pointless point of view.
He used to be someone, he isn’t anymore, I’ve no idea why HDM would interview him on this, or any, issue

For what it’s worth I’m glad the Council are looking to be a host for the RL World Cup. Yes it will cost, but the Council role is, in my opinion, much more than emptying bins and collecting rent. It’s also about helping to set the feel of the place, and what Hull needs is a continuation of the feeling of optimism and pride that 2017 brought.
Even the fact that the Council looks ambitious on things like this, and the Channel 4 bid, subconsciously affects kids in the area who we all need to be ambitious in the future.
£150k? ...drop in the ocean as far as I’m concerned if it’s part of a long term show of ambition.

Oh and of course you’re spot on about the sporting success affect on the economy too. People all around the world know us purely because we were in the PL.

I’m no fan of his at all, and I’ve no idea why HDM are giving him coverage, but I’m not sure Hull is lightyears behind other cities either. In what respect?

Obviously just my opinion, but I spend alot of my working week in cities like Manchester, Liverpool,Leeds,Newcastle,Edinburgh and Sheffield etc and all these cities are vibrant, modern, lots of construction/new things happening and have a really great feel about them. Hull on the other hand just always seems to be standing still at best.

While we are on the subject of HCC.
They closed James reckitt ave for 2 weeks for resurfacing.
You would expect s some major amount of work to be done in that time.
They have done about the amount of work highways England could have done shutting it for 3 nights.
All the traffic backlogs for little work.

    Fair enough
I don’t share your opinion that it’s standing still.
I think it has transformed in recent years and we’re still seeing positive changes and ambition now.

I can't believe the comments on here over a former and very committed public servant.

HCC have a thankless task and deserve the support of all you ****ing idiots who voted for them.

Also, I used to travel up for games, before, during and after the PL I might add, but rarely spent any money in the city beyond parking.

    Place is a ****hole tbh.

I disagree, we are not light years behind the cities you mention, we are just smaller and at a geographical disadvantage. We exceeded at city of culture which placed the negative Geraghty mindset in our city back into the minority, never let it hold us back again.

Ambition imo would have been building a arena of an actual decent size that would bring big stars and money into the city which would see us compete with sheffield/leeds and have it ready for the city of culture year. Instead we got a concert hall to small to bring anyone of any real great shakes.

We just never seem to do anything ambitious or it happens years after it should

In town this morning bumped into a large group approx 30 on Ferensway of foreign fellows probably Dutch, who then went for a coffee in Costa.

I daresay they were not here for the rugby or the sea shanty festival.

Even a Championship level Hull City brings in more tourism dollars than WC rugby. There are these foreign groups for every Saturday home game, you hear the flemish outside the ground, and other northern european tongues inc norwegian.

Now the weak Council want to bribe their way back into RL favour after the abysmal turn out last Saturday against NZ.

    Scandalous..

Us getting it was also heavily linked to the Siemens deal.

    Bollocks.

Leeds is in the shadow of MCR, Sheffield is in the shadow of Leeds and we are stuck 60 miles away from both of these, with a 19th century railway service and a two lane A road to connect us to the rest of the company.

Leeds and Sheffield both have local populations of at least one mill, central locations, and decent transport links. We will never attract people in big numbers when they can see same artistes in West or South Yorkshire.

Idea of the day: move 'Leeds' airport from Yeadon to yon side of Goole near M18 and M1 links.

Surely a win for Leeds and Hull?
