Bugger. Just received notification of a £60 fine for venturing into there. I do think the circumstances were extreme. I was driving from the city centre, westwards. Ten past 6 pm ( the restriction is til 6.30. Hull Fair was on. There was a huge line of stationery traffic in the non bus lane and ( I am fairly certain there were) diversions in place approaching the Walton St junction. I pulled into the empty lane to divert left, to get out of the traffic. It felt as though It was the right thing to do, but I ventured into the bus lane as it turns out, too early. The two photos they sent through show 6 other cars did exactly the same. I do feel it was the sensible thing to do, if not complying with some stupid rules. I am going to appeal, if not just to make me feel better, anyone think I may have a case, or heard of any successful appeals?

I've been done in the exact same place. I didn't appeal because I couldn't find any grounds to do so, I don't think 'sensible thing to do', although probably right, cuts much ice with magistrates, they just go by the book.
Good luck if you do appeal though.

A while back my daughter moved over for an ambulance to pass and went into the bus lane, she got the standard fine letter but ignored it. She is coping, just, with financial matters so just ignored the fine, and the next letter, which had risen to £120 I think. By this time she was told that she would be taken to court, she ignored that as well. Too scared to ask me to help out as I have done many times, I knew nothing of this by the way, until that is she got a letter stating the that the bailiffs were arriving the next day to take goods to the value of £ 520. This was to cover court costs, council cost and fees for the bailiffs, by which time my daughter was besides herself. It was my wife who found out first at which point I got the bailiff letter and rang the number straight away, I paid the whole lot with my credit card to which I got an assurance that no one would turn up at our daughters house. When I at last got a chance to talk to her and told her why she didn't let me know at the beginning, she said that as I am always baling her out she was too ashamed, so instead of the £60 fine it turned into £520, don't ignore the fine folks.

If it was me (and it occasionally is me) I would pay it and get on with my life. You have no case for an appeal, based on what you have said here.

How early did you move across? #AskingForAFriend !

I did exactly the same t'other week, but fairly close to the diversion

    I'd best check my mail

I do think if you were close though that it's worth an appeal because the road markings didn't fit at all with the closure there so it might simply be an automatic thing which didn't take that into account

If "sensible thing to do" means the safe thing to do then surely that overrules the rather more arbitrary bus lane rule.

We might well think that but I don't think it does because unless you have cctv to show that doing what you did prevented an accident I don't think the magistrate will buy it. They can only work with the evidence before them.

I'm not saying it's right but that's the law.

I think an angle grinder is the only answer to the continued persecution of the motorist

    Appeal it all the way.

C’mon ref, a neighbour did something similar, the bailiff came and spent the afternoon and evening sat on the wall playing on his phone. Finally ****ed off and not been back since.

It was close enough to at least question it. One of those when I was focused on getting out of a messy situation and it never occurred to me until too late. They must make a fortune Hull Fair week. As I say, there were 6 cars in the bus lane just in the two shots on my notification. No wonder they want to keep the fair there!

Oh Mrs A just reminded me, this was on a Saturday. How does 6.10pm Saturday evening constitute rush hour traffic(apart from one week a year)

Mate got done over the Summer - exactly the same place. He was only in the lane for about 30 yards. Ridiculous situation and I’m utterly convinced it’s simply another revenue stream.

They are a bloody scam. Nothing to do with the flow of traffic and most drivers don't even bother using them when they are allowed. All they do is back up traffic. The sooner they get abolished the better as they are bloody dangerous.

Don’t they have to pass it all on to the treasury?

The trouble is the people who administer these things don't take "sensible" into acount...they're only interested in the wonga from the cash cow (motorist)...you're bang to rights, just pay it and move on.
