The Premier European Yearling Sale gets underway this morning at 11am. As time is never on my side these days I haven't had a chance to do a write up, but here is an article on what to watch out for that I've lifted from the European Bloodstock News. All I'll say is: anyone want to chip in a tenner for Lot 325?! THREE DAYS OF QUALITY AS BOOK 1 GETS UNDER WAY Full-brothers to Classic winners Was (Lot 217) and Just The Judge (Lot 366), full-sisters to Classic winners Kew Gardens (Lot 298) and Capri (Lot 333), half-siblings to Classic winners Masked Marvel (Lot 186), Legatissimo (Lot 202), Beauty Parlour (Lot 255), Golden Horn (Lot 371), Galileo Gold (Lot 383), Sea Of Class (Lot 404) and Penelopa (Lot 443), and colts out of Classic winners Sky Lantern (Lot 120) and Talent (Lot 152), are just a selection of the high-quality yearlings catalogued for Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The auction starts at 11:00am over the next three days and all 519 catalogued yearlings are eligible for the £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus scheme. The top 20 active sires in Britain and Ireland have 265 yearlings catalogued between them, with the current top ten accounting for 166. The current leading four, Galileo, Dubawi, Frankel and Sea The Stars, have 94 yearlings listed between them. Sires with their first crop of two-year-olds also feature prominently, with current leader No Nay Never having ten catalogued from his second crop and Kingman 31. Devotees of first-crop sires will also be spoilt for choice, with 15 freshmen represented by a total of 91 yearlings, led by the Champion trio of Golden Horn, Gleneagles and Muhaarar. Overseas-based sires traditionally play a prominent role in the sale and this year’s US-based list includes Distorted Humor, Kitten’s Joy, Medaglia D’Oro, More Than Ready, Uncle Mo and War Front, while leading French-based sires Dabirsim, Kendargent, Le Havre, Siyouni and Wootton Bassett also have yearlings catalogued. The largest consignment comes from Highclere Stud with 31 yearlings, Newsells Park Stud are next with 24, followed by the Castlebridge Consignment (22), New England Stud (21) and Watership Down Stud (20), while last year’s sale-topping consignor Norris Bloodstock has seven catalogued. The last-named was responsible for the Galileo filly out of Dank, who was bought by Godolphin for 4,000,000gns. Three other yearlings were also sold for at least 2,000,000gns 12 months ago – Dubawi colts out of Izzi Top and Sky Lantern and a Frankel filly out of Prowess – and 13 other yearlings realised at least a million guineas. The 2017 sale achieved a record aggregate of 102,290,000gns for 349 yearlings sold, a clearance rate of 79 per cent, and record average and median prices of 293,095gns and 165,000gns respectively. The leading consignors by aggregate last year were Highclere Stud (23 sold for 9,123,000gns), Newsells Park Stud (14 sold for 5,962,000gns) and the Castlebridge Consignment (21 sold for 4,810,000gns), while the top buyers were Godolphin (27 lots purchased for 15,930,000gns), SackvilleDonald (28 bought for 12,943,000gns) and Shadwell Estate Company (17 bought for 8,272,000gns). Highest price so far this year 3.5 million gns for The Dubawi x Dar Re Mi colt sells to QATAR RACING Pocket money for them
It was a great sale but the reality will shine through this week when the middle and lower end horses are offered. I’m hearing bad things about the foal sales coming up - hundreds of foals being turned away suggesting breeders are bailing out, either because they think the bottom is about to fall out of the market or due to Brexit fears. The reality is if Brexit goes pear-shaped the racing industry could be badly hit as the free movement of horses between the UK and Europe (particularly Ireland where 44% of all the horses racing in the UK originate from) could be stopped/severely restricted.
